Devils Tower's hexagonal columns stand over the Belle Fourche River bottomland, and the campground is in that bottomland, under the same rock you walk beneath on the Tower Trail loop. The walk stays at the base, close enough that the rock reads as a wall. Belle Fourche River Campground is the only overnight inside the monument.
Recreation.gov lists the campground as first-come only, with no hookups and room for RVs up to 35 feet. Arrive early in summer, and earlier still during Sturgis Motorcycle Rally week in early August, when the NPS flags changes to parking at the monument. Hulett and Sundance are the nearby towns for fuel and groceries. Climbers treat June as a quiet month under the park's voluntary climbing closure, which also keeps overnight bivouacs off the tower itself. If you need more sleeping space or a longer rig than that length cap allows, look at RVs for rent across Wyoming. Primitive pads sit outside the monument boundary in Black Hills National Forest, not inside the park.
The Bighorns
High plains drop into canyon country along two Forest Service byways. US-14A climbs Medicine Wheel Passage, and US-16 runs the Cloud Peak Skyway past granite peaks over Meadowlark Lake. Medicine Wheel is the day stop on the 14A side. Buffalo and Sheridan bookend the range for supplies.
Along US-16, Lake View Campground takes reservations through Recreation.gov. The other named pads on that road, plus Bald Mountain on US-14A, stay first-come and get gated after season closures each fall, reopening as weather allows. Nights stay cold up there even in midsummer, so pack for that before you chase the views.
Wind River country
Just south of Lander, the Popo Agie River vanishes into a limestone cavern called the Sinks and reappears a quarter mile down-canyon in a quiet trout pool called the Rise. That short walk is why people overnight at Sinks Canyon State Park. The Wind River Range is the longer walk from the same base when you have a full day.
Popo Agie Campground runs reservation-only from May through September, then flips to first-come the rest of the year. Yurts stay on the reservation system year-round. Thermopolis's hot springs and Cody make easy day drives when you want a break from the canyon.
Vedauwoo near Laramie
East of Laramie, Vedauwoo is a rock garden of wind-sculpted granite domes and boulder piles big enough to scramble on. The Forest Service campground fits tents, trailers, and RVs on a mix of reservation and first-come sites with no hookups, as of September 2026.
Between Cheyenne and Laramie, Curt Gowdy State Park keeps a reservoir campground that is mostly reservation-only through September. Cheyenne Frontier Days draws a parked day crowd, and the rodeo's own page states that overnight camping is not permitted at Frontier Park.
When the trip turns toward Flaming Gorge, it belongs to Utah. Grand Teton and Jackson Hole belong to Jackson, and the park loop is its own trip from Yellowstone. From neighboring states, Rapid City is the Black Hills handoff toward Devils Tower, Billings approaches the Bighorns from Montana, and Denver, Fort Collins, and Salt Lake City cover the southern and western approaches.
