Bison graze the flats on Antelope Island with Great Salt Lake water on one side and white salt crust on the other. The Davis County Causeway is the only road in, a straight line of pavement across open lake to that mountainous island. Stay at Bridger Bay and you wake up on that same ground, the herd still out there. Late summer, brine flies and gnats get thick near the water, so give the shoreline a little space those weeks.
Book the site before the van if you want a weekend on the water. Utah State Parks recommends reservations then. The park gate closes at night, so a late start means you sleep in the Cottonwood Canyons instead.
West in Tooele County, the Bonneville Salt Flats are a day on white crust to the horizon, heat shimmer and no plants, the old land-speed racing ground. The BLM lists no camping on the flats, and spring moisture can close the crust.
Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons
Steep granite walls close in on Big and Little Cottonwood, ski lifts visible above the evergreens. Sleep at Spruces in Big Cottonwood or Tanners Flat in Little Cottonwood, forest campgrounds under those lifts in summer.
Reserve Spruces and Tanners Flat at least 5 days ahead on Recreation.gov, as of September 2026, and plan on a 2-night stay for a weekend, 3 on a holiday weekend. Some sites are first-come, but that is not a same-night backup if the island gate is already shut. Vehicle length is listed per site and counts the tow vehicle, and Tanners Flat warns that most sites will not take large RVs or trailers. The Forest Service treats Big and Little Cottonwood as watersheds and prohibits swimming and camping near streams and lakes. Stay on the campground pads and out of the creeks.
Ski weeks run up to Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude. In severe weather, UDOT's traction law applies on SR-190 in Big Cottonwood and SR-210 in Little Cottonwood.
Wasatch Mountain State Park and Jordanelle
At Midway in the Heber Valley, golf greens meet the peaks at Wasatch Mountain State Park, and Pine Creek Campground is the night in that valley. Next door, Jordanelle State Park is a reservoir under ski runs on the ridge, with camping, boating, and fishing across three recreation areas. Spend the day in Park City from either park, the ski town around the 2002 Olympic venues.
Pine Creek reservations open 16 weeks ahead on the Utah State Parks page, as of September 2026, and a stay is limited to 14 days in any 30-day stretch. Get that pad before you book the van.
Timpanogos Cave National Monument is a ticketed limestone day, illuminated formations and helictites in the chamber. Tickets are sold at the visitor center, and the chamber holds at 45 F.
Ogden is the Wasatch Front city north of Salt Lake City. Provo is the one south.
Moab and the red-rock south are a separate trip that belongs to the rest of Utah, and Zion National Park is its own trip.
