Point the van east to Lost Dutchman State Park and take a site in the water-and-electric loop for your first night. The Superstition escarpment stands straight over the saguaros from camp, and the Siphon Draw trail climbs into the canyon from a trailhead you can walk to. Go fall through spring, because summer on the desert floor runs past 100 degrees and pushes the whole trip north to Sedona and the Grand Canyon.
Siphon Draw is four miles round trip into the canyon; keep climbing and it becomes the Flatiron, 5.8 miles, steep, unmaintained near the top, and not a hike to start in the heat. Treasure Loop is the easy 2.4-mile version under the same wall. Both leave from the campground, so the van stays parked while you walk.
The campground keeps 68 electric-and-water sites, with the rest on paved roads and no size limit, so a van fits any spot, and you can size up to an RV if you want more beds for the same loop. Check-in is 2 p.m., and a reserved late arrival grabs a site map at the ranger station and drives in. Peak-season weekends need two nights and book up to a year out, so lock the overnight first and book the van around the dates you get.
If the loop is full, Lake Pleasant is the county fallback northwest of town, on Maricopa County's own booking system. The Apache Trail out of Apache Junction is a day drive, not a second night.
Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat on the Apache Trail
Canyon Lake shows up two-thirds of the way out from camp, 990 acres of blue water walled in by cliffs, with boat launches at Laguna and Palo Verde and an 8-dollar day pass to picnic on the shore. Tortilla Flat is the old stage stop just past it, a six-building town with a saloon and a shaded porch, and it is where you turn the van around.
Lake Pleasant, the valley's close reservoir
Lake Pleasant is the weekend water in the other direction, northwest of the city off SR 74. The county keeps 148 sites across the Roadrunner and Desert Tortoise campgrounds, the developed ones with water, power, a ramada, and a grill. Book ahead through the county system, and remember the summer fire ban covers charcoal and shoreline fires here, so you cook on propane if you camp before October.
Sedona and the Grand Canyon
When the valley bakes, the trip moves uphill. Oak Creek Canyon and the red rocks are a couple hours north around Sedona, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is a long day handled from Flagstaff; both, plus the rest of the state, sit on the Arizona campervan hub. Country Thunder in Florence each April and Phoenix Raceway NASCAR weekends sell on-site camping, mostly dirt, if those dates are why you have the van.
