The night to book around Coachella is Lake Cahuilla, south on Jefferson Street where the valley floor runs up against the Santa Rosa Mountains. It is a Riverside County park, which means the site goes through RivCo Parks and it goes first, before the van. Check-in is 2 p.m. and the gate locks from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., so rolling in late means a night parked somewhere you did not plan on. April is the exception to all of it, when the Coachella and Stagecoach weekends take the valley and the sites go with it.
Outside those weekends, Joshua Tree is what people drive out for, in through the park's south entrance off I-10 at Cottonwood Spring, about 25 miles east of Indio; the Joshua Tree lander has where to camp in and around the park. For the aerial tram and the palm canyons, that is Palm Springs on the valley's west side.
Lake Cahuilla for the first night
Lake Cahuilla sits at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains south of La Quinta, 135 acres of fishing lake with the range going up straight behind the water. It is a fishing lake and not a swimming one, which surprises people who see water in the desert and pack accordingly. The county park keeps 96 campsites across hookup and dry loops, with a dump station and showers, at 30 to 50 dollars a night as of August 2026.
The hookup loops are the ones worth wanting in shoulder season, and for the April weekends the sites go months out.
The festival weekends and what fits
Coachella takes two April weekends and Stagecoach the one after, all at the Empire Polo Club just over the line in Indio. In 2027 the Coachella weekends are April 9-11 and 16-18. Those three weekends are when the valley's rooms, sites, and vans all go at once, well ahead of the festival itself.
The two festivals want opposite vehicles, which is the part that catches people out. Coachella's own car camping only takes vans with no toilet on board. Stagecoach runs the other way, selling powered sites that require a self-contained RV with an installed toilet, a water tank, and a bed, so if the trip wants that kind of rig, RVs rent across California.
Painted Canyon in the Mecca Hills
Painted Canyon is Coachella's backyard oddity, a slot of color-banded badlands wall in the Mecca Hills southeast of Indio, ironwood and smoke trees down in the sandy washes. It is a morning, not a night. The van stays at the trailhead and you walk in, and what you get is a couple of hours of narrow canyon before the heat arrives.
Getting there means Painted Canyon Road, four-wheel-drive off Highway 195, with little or no cell signal and no marked trails once you are in, so go early with water and skip it in a two-wheel-drive van or after dark. Sleep back at Lake Cahuilla.
