Climb one of the two towers at Platte River State Park and you're above the river you sleep beside, woodland on the bluffs between you and the water. The campground is in those trees, full-hookup pads on a woodland loop, with a waterfall and spray park on the same ground. Mahoney, at Ashland, has its own climbable tower, the Peter Kiewit Lodge, and an aquatic center that pulls the summer crowd.
The two parks share the same river bluffs, Platte River at Louisville and Mahoney at Ashland. Mahoney's overnight is Lakeside or Little Creek, still in the trees. The day at Platte River is bluff trails and mountain-bike trails, then back to the loop.
On summer weekends those loops fill, so lock the overnight before you book the van. The pad is the first reservation, and the van is the second. As of September 2026, Nebraska Game and Parks lets you reserve half the sites up to 180 days ahead, and the rest are first-come at the park office.
If Platte River and Mahoney are already booked, Louisville State Recreation Area is the overflow, and Two Rivers, west of Omaha near Waterloo, is the closest of the group. If you need more sleeping space than a van, Omaha RV rentals use those same parks.
Indian Cave and Ponca on the Missouri
South of Omaha, Indian Cave State Park opens on a sandstone cave mouth. The petroglyphs are on the ADA boardwalk, and you walk up to the rock without a scramble. Bluff trails take the rest of the day, hike and bike after the cave, and the campground is down by the river.
Half the electric sites reserve ahead, and after hours the rest are self-pay at the iron ranger. Nebraska City is on that same Missouri run.
North on the same river, Ponca State Park is the Tri-State Overlook, three states in one frame, on the Missouri National Recreational River. You sleep on the bluff or on the riverfront with electric sites.
Across the river, the Loess Hills are the Iowa day trip, and that overnight belongs with Iowa campervan rentals. Council Bluffs is across the river on the Iowa bank.
Lincoln fills on Husker Saturdays, and the university's game-weekend RV lot is the overnight if you go.
Sandhill cranes on the central Platte
In March, hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes pack the braided channel at night. At dawn they come off the water at once, and you watch from the riverside blinds at Rowe Sanctuary and the Crane Trust, the river in front of you. Fort Kearny State Recreation Area is the overnight for that morning, East and West campgrounds, and the hike-bike bridges over the Platte are the other viewing spot.
Kearney lodging and the blinds compete for the same March weekends, and the vans do too. Reserve the blind and the site before you book the van.
West of Kearney, Nebraska campervan trips take over for Lake McConaughy, the Sandhills, the Niobrara, and the Panhandle.
