Weston Bend puts the Missouri River below you, down through the trees from a bluff-top boardwalk. An accessible boardwalk takes you out to that view, so you can walk it in ordinary shoes.
A 3-mile paved bike trail runs through those same woods on the bluff. Weston's main street is the town stop after the trail.
The campground has electric, family, and full-hookup sites under those trees. It is 30 to 45 minutes from downtown Kansas City, which is why it is the usual first night. Missouri State Parks sites open 12 months ahead, so the site is booked before the van.
If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, look at Kansas City RV rentals. Arrowhead lots open hours before a Chiefs kickoff, and the Truman Sports Complex does not offer overnight stays.
Smithville Lake
Camp Branch and Crows Creek put a Kansas City weekend on Smithville Lake, the close water overnight this city actually takes. The two campgrounds together carry 777 sites, electric loops you can run again without a new plan.
Camp Branch and Crows Creek both have electric sites, and Crows Creek has water hookups on some of them.
Clay County runs both campgrounds, not the state park system. Clay County takes online reservations for both, and anything unreserved is walk-up. Weekends are a two-night minimum. Lakes on the Kansas side of the metro belong to Kansas City, Kansas.
Watkins Mill State Park
At Lawson, Watkins Mill State Park puts a lake next to Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark you can do on the same stop as the overnight. You tour the mill during the day and walk the lake trail. You sleep at the lake.
Most of the 96 sites have electric, so the van night is a normal state-park loop beside that mill. Some sites stay open year-round, the winter pads near Kansas City. The rest of the campground follows the mid-April through late October window.
Truman Lake
Harry S Truman State Park at Warsaw is the farther lake weekend. Truman is the biggest of the three waters, a shoreline you leave the metro to reach. Six campgrounds spread along that shore, so you pick a loop when you book.
Bobcat Run is the electric and family loop, the one to book if you want hookups on this water. It runs early March through late October. Showers and water start in early April, after the loop has opened. Dump station and showers go off in the off-season.
Knob Noster State Park
East of Kansas City, Knob Noster State Park is the overnight when you want a state-park pad without a lake plan. The campground is open year-round with electric, full-hookup, and family sites.
Off-season means fill-station water only. Showers and water run mid-April through late October.
Farther north, Lewis and Clark State Park has a prairie picnic ground on an oxbow. The lake is dry from drought as of September 2026, with no water activities.
