Palisades State Park and Split Rock Creek

Around Sioux Falls, the overnight is quartzite and river parks on Split Rock Creek and the Big Sioux. Palisades is the gorge stay, Big Sioux Recreation Area at Brandon is the close-in first night, and Newton Hills near Canton adds woods with a summer swim beach. Falls Park is the parked downtown day on the same pink rock.

Campervan nights and a Falls Park day in Sioux Falls

Palisades State Park is a Sioux quartzite gorge with Split Rock Creek at the bottom, under walkable ledges that stand up into climbable walls. Hikers and climbers share those formations, working from the creek up the faces. Trails follow the creek, and the day-use bank is there for fishing or a canoe on that same water.

On weekend days the formations hold both groups at once. Stay the night and you get morning on the same stone, a different line through the gorge before you leave. That second look is why the overnight belongs in the park.

Book the campsite before the van. King and Queen campgrounds at Palisades have electrical loops and tent-only loops plus camping cabins, reserved through GoOutdoorsSouthDakota. Tent-only pads are a different night from an electrical site, so match the listing to the loop. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, look at South Dakota RV rentals.

The park stays open year-round. Showers and flush toilets may be off from October through April, as of September 2026, with vault toilets still open. I-90 is the road from Sioux Falls to the park.

Big Sioux Recreation Area at Brandon

The Big Sioux River at Brandon is a recreation-area overnight on the water. Canoes use the river, and hiking and bike paths stay in the trees along the bank. If you get in late, this is the first night that still puts you on water.

South Dakota GFP books electrical and non-electrical loops plus camping cabins here. In winter, snowmobilers use the park and an enclosed warming house.

Newton Hills State Park

Newton Hills State Park near Canton is hardwood forest on the Coteau des Prairies, a wooded night in prairie country. Hiking, biking, and horse trails stay in the trees. Hardwoods close in over the campsites, and the paths stay in that shade.

The swim beach is a summer stay. Cross-country ski trails take the same hills in winter. Camping includes electrical loops, tent loops, horse campsites, and camping cabins.

Falls Park

Downtown Sioux Falls, the Big Sioux River falls over pink-red Sioux quartzite ledges beside the Queen Bee Mill ruins. The visitor information center has an observation tower and an outdoor deck over the drop, and walking paths and picnic areas follow the river through the park. From the deck you get the river, the ledges, and the mill walls in one view.

A seasonal farmers market and the Falls Overlook Cafe sit along those paths. Falls Park is day-use only, with no camping on the grounds. Sleep at Palisades, Big Sioux, or Newton Hills and come into town for the falls.

Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne holds a quartzite cliff line and a bison herd on prairie, and Pipestone National Monument is a working quarry for ceremonial pipes, both Minnesota days that belong to Minnesota. South of Sioux Falls, the Missouri overnight is Yankton. Omaha is the next city south, and Minneapolis is the next one east.
