Ride the North Shore at Clinton Lake, out at Lawrence, and the reservoir stays in the picture. Oak-hickory singletrack stays on the bluff, with sailboats and windsurfers on the open water below. You spend the morning on color-rated loops, or on the mountain-bike skills course at the state park, then the easy hours after the bike at the Bloomington swim beach and the disc-golf course on the south shore. Clinton State Park puts the overnight on that same water, on improved loops with hookups, so the first night is still the lake.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages more than 50 miles of trail around the lake. Clinton State Park is where you sleep, with a 25-mile hike-and-bike trail and reservable loops on the shoreline. Book that pad first, then the van.
Summer is hot and humid on the water, and Kansas wind will lean a tall van on the causeways. Reservable loops fill on summer weekends. September and October are the easy window after Labor Day. Spring brings the lakes back at the front of severe-weather season, when tornado frequency in Kansas peaks from mid-April through mid-June.
Kansas Speedway race weekends
The Kansas Speedway infield is grass and grandstand light, a ring of campers parked tight before the green flag. Trams roll in from the outer lots. You came for the race and you sleep inside the oval. The track sells camping only for its two race weekends, fall and spring. Fall tent camping sells out well ahead, as of September 2026, so treat the infield as a reservation you lock early too.
A fall race weekend lands in the same stretch that is otherwise the easy lake season after Labor Day. Those dates compete for the same vans and the same sites at Clinton and Hillsdale. Get the overnight down before you lock the vehicle.
Hillsdale Lake
When Hillsdale Lake filled, more than 70 percent of the standing timber was left in the basin on purpose, so dead trees still break the surface and the water never reads as a clean bowl. Horses use the Saddle Ridge trail, and anglers work 51 miles of shoreline for walleye and crappie. Scott Creek Campground has water-and-electric sites, and the improved loops take reservations.
Jefferson Point at Perry Lake sits in the Lawrence and Topeka orbit, campsites in forested rolling hills with a horse trail through the oak-hickory.
