Morning hits the Watchman first, a dark triangle over the campground, while the Virgin River is still in shade at the bottom of Zion Canyon. You walk toward the river once the sandstone goes pale. From the Temple of Sinawava you wade the Narrows between slot walls, mostly in the river, and the current decides how far you go. Springdale is the town beside the park.
When the river runs high, the National Park Service closes that hike. It also shuts down for two hours after any Flash Flood Warning.
The last pitch of Angels Landing is chains on a knife-edge of sandstone, with a drop on both sides. You need a permit for that section as of September 2026, issued through a seasonal lottery or a day-before lottery. Hikers without a permit can still go as far as Scout Lookout.
Lock the Watchman pad before you book the van. Watchman Campground requires a reservation for every site as of September 2026, and there is no walk-up. Standard sites book up to six months ahead, group sites up to twelve, and the length cap is 40 feet. If you need more sleeping space than that cap allows, look at RV rentals near Zion National Park.
South Campground is the other loop in Zion Canyon. It closes seasonally, and reservations open only 14 days ahead, so it is not a first night you can lock from farther away.
In shuttle season, as of September 2026, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles, so the van stays at the campground and the shuttle is the canyon day. Outside shuttle season the road reopens to personal vehicles.
East of Canyon Junction you are on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, and as of September 2026 a van over 35 feet 9 inches long, 7 feet 10 inches wide, or 11 feet 4 inches high is turned around at the entrance and is not permitted past Canyon Junction. A high-roof campervan can meet those width and height numbers. Check those numbers against the van before you point east.
Kolob Canyons
Finger canyons stack in parallel off I-15, red rock falling away from the scenic-drive pullouts. You look down those slots from the drive, then you turn around and come back. The National Park Service does not list a campground in this district, so the night stays in Zion Canyon or at Coral Pink, and the road can close for snow or ice in winter.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Rose sand piles up in ripples, with an off-highway-vehicle area on one side of the field and a non-motorized walking area on the other. You can ride one side and walk the other in the same stop. The state park has a campground, and that is the second night outside Zion Canyon.
Kanab is the other town people use for this stretch of Utah. The Grand Canyon's North Rim is the Arizona day.
Bryce Canyon is a separate trip from Zion Canyon, and it belongs to the rest of Utah.
