Twice a year the Talladega Superspeedway infield turns into a small, loud city. On a NASCAR Cup weekend the ground inside the 2.66-mile tri-oval fills with rigs and vans, parked close enough to the 33-degree banking that the pack comes past at eye level and you feel the draft in your chest. Where you set up inside decides your whole weekend.
Talladega Boulevard is the loud loop, a mix of gravel, grass, and paved pads that take any setup including a Class B van, with no quiet hours.
If you would rather sleep, Finish Line Premium is the paved, full-hookup side, 50-amp with water and sewer, a quiet time that starts at midnight, and two five-day infield wristbands with the spot.
Book it early. The full-hookup infield lots go first and were already gone for the October Cup weekend, sold out months before the green flag.
Getting to the gates is simple. Take I-20 to exit 168, then Speedway Boulevard into Lincoln.
A campervan sleeps two or three. If your group is bigger, the same weekend on the banks works in a full-size RV.
Cheaha State Park
The rest of the year, the reason to point a van at this county is Cheaha. It is the highest ground in Alabama at 2,407 feet, a ridge of granite boulders and wind-warped trees that on many mornings sits above the clouds. Pulpit Rock is a short, steep walk to a quartzite cliff that faces the sunset, Bald Rock is an easy boardwalk to the same kind of view, and Cheaha Lake is a six-acre swimming hole at the foot of the mountain.
A van camps on Cheaha's improved loop, on full hookups. Check-in is noon at the Mountain Store, the gate code comes on your confirmation, and weekends carry a two-night minimum.
Come up on Talladega Scenic Drive, AL-281, off I-20 at exit 191, and skip the narrow Cheaha Road out of Munford that the park itself flags as too tight for big rigs.
Talladega National Forest wraps the park and holds the quieter overflow. Turnipseed is a primitive forest campground with no potable water, open March into early December, and Lake Chinnabee sits nearby with the Chinnabee Silent Trail dropping down to Cheaha Falls. Fill your tank before you leave the paved sites.
Logan Martin Lake and Majestic Caverns
Logan Martin Lake sits right by town, a Coosa River reservoir that runs on a local boat habit, ringed by private RV parks and drawn down through the winter. It is not the reason an out-of-towner rents a van, but it is there for a slow afternoon.
Majestic Caverns, in Childersburg southwest of the track and still listed around town by its old name of DeSoto Caverns, is the rainy-day call. The main room, the Cathedral, runs taller than a ten-story building and longer than a football field, and the walk-in tour stays cool whatever the valley is doing.
