Just south of Birmingham, past Pelham off I-65, Oak Mountain folds 100-plus miles of trail over a double ridge of longleaf pine. What people rent the van for is the riding: about 50 miles of BUMP-built singletrack, the boulder chaos of Blood Rock, and the Tails jump line off Group Camp Road. The Red Trail made IMBA's Epic list, and the Bump and Grind race runs it every spring.
If you'd rather be on foot, the North Trailhead climbs to King's Chair, a bare rock seat out on the Double Oak ridge with the whole valley dropped away below. Peavine Falls comes off the top ridge, about 65 feet down to a pool you scramble to reach.
The bed is the campground on Beaver Lake, open all year under the pines, and it makes an easy first night even off a late flight. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth sits north of downtown and the park is south, so a night landing just runs I-65 down to Pelham and comes in the south gate, since the north gate closes at sunset, as of August 2026. Reserve early on summer weekends, and a ranger works the park line around the clock if you're rolling in late. If the Beaver Lake loops are booked out, Tannehill Ironworks west toward Tuscaloosa takes first-come overflow.
Summer here is humid from dawn, low 90s by afternoon, with storms most days, so hookups matter. Oak Mountain's 2024 rebuild put 50/30-amp service on every RV site, widened the pads, and added family bathhouses and a dog park.
Northwest of the metro, Rickwood Caverns runs a guided mile that drops 365 stairs into a steady 62 degrees, past the King's Room to a still underground lake. It draws big school and church groups, so tours book up, and it's the natural call on a washed-out afternoon. You keep your site at Oak Mountain either way.
Wind Creek and Lake Martin, southeast on US-280
Lake Martin is the Birmingham weekend on the water, a 39,180-acre reservoir with 700 miles of shoreline and bass tournaments that weigh in right at the Wind Creek ramp. Chimney Rock is the one everybody knows, a jumping rock standing up out of the lake. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the waterfront runs full, so a summer Saturday wants a booking well ahead.
Wind Creek's campground drops right to the shore. The ordinary sites are fine for spring and fall, and the premium waterfront pads carry full hookups for the low-90s afternoons when you want the air running. Come down US-280 to Alexander City. If the group needs more berths than a van holds, those big pads take a full-size rig too, which is the Birmingham RV rentals question.
