Sedona's red rocks and Oak Creek Canyon

Hike Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Devil's Bridge, then sleep on Oak Creek at Cave Springs or Pine Flat. Spring and fall are the season; in summer the canyon shade and the creek stay cooler while town bakes. The campgrounds line SR 89A, right on the water.

Sun shining through trees in Sedona AZ

Hike the red rocks, sleep on Oak Creek

A night on Oak Creek is the part of a Sedona trip worth planning around. The creek runs past the sites, the canyon walls close in over SR 89A, and the red rock trailheads are a short drive back down the road. Most people build the days out from there, starting at Cathedral Rock.

Cathedral Rock is the short, steep one, about a mile round trip up a cleft in the sandstone to the saddle between the spires, with a scramble near the top. A free Sedona Shuttle runs to the trailhead Thursday through Sunday, which beats fighting for a spot in the lot. Devil's Bridge is the big draw on the west side, the largest sandstone arch around and wide enough to walk out onto.

The canyon drive is the other half of the trip. SR 89A threads about 15 miles of red-walled canyon from Sedona up to the Mogollon Rim, with Slide Rock State Park partway along, where the creek runs over a natural slickrock chute. The swim area there is closed as of August 2026, but the park stays open for the walk and the picnic tables.

Cave Springs and Pine Flat are the two canyon nights you can still book. Both sit on the water off SR 89A with no hookups, both reserve on Recreation.gov, and both sit outside the Pocket Fire closure that keeps Manzanita and West Fork shut through the end of September 2026. Book the site first and the van second, since the campground is the piece with a fixed number of nights in it. Pine Flat runs mid-April to late October, so a cold-season trip holds Cave Springs instead.

Free red rock nights west of Sedona

When the canyon campgrounds are full, the free option is the designated dispersed camping west of town. The Forest Service built eight areas, about 200 sites in all, then closed the rest of the red rock to camping, so you have to be on one of the pads and not just any patch of dirt. FR 525 off SR 89A is the usual way in. It's first come first served, up to 14 days, with no water and no wood or charcoal fires, only propane stoves you can shut off.

Hookups down in Cottonwood, and a look at Jerome

For hookups, a dump station, and room for a longer rig, drop down to Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood on the Verde River, which fits 40-foot motor homes but doesn't allow generators, so book an electric site if you want power. It sells out most spring and fall weekends, so reserve early. If a full RV with hookups suits your trip better than a van, compare the Sedona RV rentals. From Cottonwood it's a short climb up to Jerome, the old copper town stacked on a hillside, where the Douglas Mansion looks out over the whole Verde Valley.

The Grand Canyon is a Flagstaff base

The Grand Canyon South Rim is the other big Arizona drive, but from Sedona it's a day north and back, not an overnight. Flagstaff is the base for those campgrounds, so start with the Flagstaff campervan page for that leg, or the Arizona campervan landers for the rest of the state.
