The South Rim night is the one to lock first, ahead of the van and ahead of the rest of the week. Mather Campground sits a mile back from the rim in the pines, no hookups and 30 feet of length, and it opens on Recreation.gov six months out. Trailer Village next door has the park's only full hookups and pull-throughs to 50 feet, bookable as far as 13 months ahead. Both fill for summer, so take the dates the canyon gives you and fit the van around them.
The rim is 80 miles up US-180 from town, and the entrance station is $35 per vehicle for seven days, cards only.
The San Francisco Peaks and the Inner Basin
When Flagstaff isn't on the rim, it's up here. The peaks rise straight north of town, topped by Humphreys at 12,633 feet, the highest point in Arizona, and the aspens on their flanks are what pull locals up every fall. The walk everyone names is the Inner Basin, and its trailhead is at Lockett Meadow.
Lockett is out. Forest Road 552 is closed to all traffic through November 2026, and the Forest Service calls it too steep and narrow for RVs even in an open year. Take the Kachina Trail off Snowbowl Road instead, about 5.2 miles one way through the same aspen, and sleep back down in town either way.
The Sunset Crater and Wupatki loop
North of town, US-89 meets a 35-mile paved loop that runs from the black cinder cone at Sunset Crater out to the red sandstone pueblos at Wupatki, with the Painted Desert opening up past them. It's an easy day of driving, lava field on one end and Ancestral Puebloan ruins on the other, and it's the trip out of Flagstaff with a van-friendly place to sleep right at the start.
Bonito Campground sits at the Sunset Crater entrance, 18 miles from town, on paved roads and spurs, no hookups, at $34 a night as of August 2026, with a 42-foot length limit. Check the calendar before you count on it, though, because it's set to close early for roadwork in late September 2026. One $25 pass covers both monuments for up to seven days.
Walnut Canyon and a first night near town
Walnut Canyon is the short trip east of Flagstaff, where the Island Trail drops less than a mile into a bowl of limestone alcoves with cliff dwellings built under the ledges. There's no camping in the monument and the gates run 9 to 5, so it's a half-day on your way through rather than an overnight; a $25 pass covers it.
For the first night itself, Canyon Vista Campground is six miles southeast on Lake Mary Road, fourteen small sites at $30 a night as of August 2026, no hookups, capped at 40 feet and open early May to mid-October. Fort Tuthill County Park, just south of town, is the year-round close-in choice and takes both reservations and first-come arrivals. Every campground around Flagstaff caps trailer and motorhome length, so if a van feels tight and you're weighing a bigger rig, check the RV rentals in Flagstaff against those limits first.
