From River's End Campground, a walk through live oaks and Spanish moss reaches the sand at North Beach, with the Tybee Island Light Station standing at the end of it. You swim, walk back, and sleep in the van with Tybee still around you. The campground loops sit a short walk inland, so you do not need to move the van to be on the beach.
Mornings start on the sand, afternoons go back under the oak canopy, and in the evening you can walk the beach again without moving the van. River's End is the city's own campground, with full hookups, reached by US-80 east from downtown, and the loops hold the van in the shade. The beach is about a half-mile from camp. You are close enough to walk it both ways in a day.
Book the pad first. River's End holds a two-night minimum on weekends from March through October, so you can't book a single Friday night there in season. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in early September. Check the storm track before you commit a Tybee week to the coast in that window.
The historic district and the squares
You come for the squares, where live oaks meet over the streets, Spanish moss hangs into the view, and wrought-iron balconies face each square. Forsyth Park's fountain is the walk everyone does. You day-park and wander from square to square on foot, then drive back to Tybee for the night, because the van doesn't sleep downtown.
Mid-March is St. Patrick's week, and St. Patrick's on the squares is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the country. The squares and every campground on the coast fill at the same time. Overnight stays are at Tybee or at Skidaway Island State Park. Book the pad and the van for that week together.
South of the squares, Wormsloe Historic Site opens onto a tunnel of live oaks and Spanish moss that leads to the colonial tabby ruin. It is day-use only, with no camping. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and adult admission is $12 as of September 2026. You park, walk the avenue, and sleep back at Tybee or Skidaway.
Skidaway Island State Park
A boardwalk at Skidaway Island State Park crosses salt marsh into maritime forest. A tidal creek shows up at the observation point, and this is the closest state-park overnight to downtown, with no published weekend minimum. No-see-ums hit at dawn and dusk near the marsh in the warm months, and coastal Georgia stays hot and humid from May through September.
The park still camps on 87 campsites, some with sewer, while a partial campground renovation keeps the Avian Trail and observation tower closed as of September 2026, with work running about a year into early 2027. Georgia State Parks book on ReserveAmerica up to 13 months ahead. Same-day campsite booking stays open until 4 p.m. if you arrive without a reservation.
Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill is the overflow if Skidaway is full or the renovation has limited sites. Earthwork ramparts and bombproof barracks sit over tidal Redbird Creek at this Civil War fort, with 67 electric campsites reached by I-95 south to GA-144.
Jekyll Island Campground and Driftwood Beach are the longer Golden Isles extension after the Tybee week, a short walk from the pads to the beach, with a 45-foot cap depending on the pad and a three-night minimum only on Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Wild horses graze the beach on Cumberland Island, ferry-only from St. Marys. Vehicles stay off the island, camping is walk-in, and the van sleeps on the mainland.
