Table Rock, Lake Jocassee, and Hunting Island

Table Rock and Lake Jocassee hold the mountain nights, granite over water and a lake clear enough to dive. Hunting Island puts you on undeveloped beach for the ocean week. Congaree is the floodplain boardwalk, with the van overnight on Lake Murray or Lake Marion near Columbia.

Campervan trips from the Upstate to the South Carolina coast

The hike up Table Rock ends on granite, looking down on Pinnacle Lake, tight against the rock, and Lake Oolenoy beyond it. You take the summit for that view. The Foothills Trail leaves from the same park and runs to Oconee, so the first night is also a trailhead.

The campground under the mountain has water and electrical hookups, and South Carolina Parks lists some sites that take vans up to 40 feet as of September 2026. If you need more length or sleeping space than that, look at RV rentals in South Carolina. Winter ice can sit on the approach roads at this elevation, and summer is when you want those hookups.

At Oconee State Park, the southern trailhead, another campground has water and electrical hookups. Sleep here first if you are coming from the south, then move toward Table Rock and Jocassee.

Sleep the second night on Lake Jocassee at Devils Fork State Park. The water under the Jocassee Gorges is clear enough that divers use this lake. Steep sides hold that water in, and the waterfalls on the far shore are the ones you reach by boat.

From Caesars Head you look off the Blue Ridge Escarpment, then walk out to the Raven Cliff Falls suspension bridge. South Carolina Parks does not allow car camping or RV camping as of September 2026. Jones Gap's camping is permit-only backcountry. The Chattooga is the river on the state line west of these parks.

Greenville, Spartanburg, and Clemson sit under the escarpment, the towns you pass as you move between these parks. Asheville and Charlotte are the North Carolina nights if the trip keeps going.

Hunting Island State Park

You walk undeveloped beach at Hunting Island, with a lighthouse that had to be moved inland after erosion took the original ground. You camp in the same park as that sand. South Carolina Parks calls this the state's "single most popular state park". Beaufort is the town on this stretch of coast.

The campground puts hookups on every site as of September 2026. The park says those sites are highly coveted year round, so lock that overnight before you book the van, and do not treat this beach as a same-day fallback. Watch hurricane season on any Lowcountry week, and check the park's own alert banner before you go.

Charleston is the peninsula and harbor week. Mount Pleasant takes the coast north of the harbor. Myrtle Beach is the Grand Strand. Savannah is the Georgia night if you keep south.

Congaree National Park and the Midlands

You walk Congaree's boardwalk through old-growth bottomland canopy. The forest is floodplain hardwood, and it stays in shade when the Midlands are hot. The NPS allows no RV or vehicle camping, and Longleaf and Bluff are walk-in only as of September 2026.

Causeways and bridges at Dreher Island State Park lead onto Lake Murray for the night. At Santee State Park you sleep on Lake Marion, where cypress stands in the water. Columbia is the city those two serve. Atlanta is the Georgia night if that is the direction you are already driving.
