Spanish moss hangs from the live oaks over Fort McAllister's campground, and tidal Redbird Creek fills and drains right along the sites. Past the creek, the salt marsh opens out flat toward the Ogeechee River. Inside the park, the old earthwork fort still has cannons along its grass walls and a hot shot furnace, built to heat cannonballs before they were fired.
The park works as a base for a family week on the coast. It sits in Richmond Hill, close to I-95 south of Savannah, so the city's squares make an easy day in town under more live oaks, and you're back at the creek by dinner. Two people chasing Tybee's beach, the squares, and Skidaway Island in something smaller have their own trip on the Savannah campervan page.
Rig sites at Fort McAllister State Park
Book the site before the motorhome. The park's longest sites are 50-foot pull-throughs, and only a handful run that long, so a 30-foot rig with bikes on the back wants one of those locked first, with the rental matched to it afterward. If the long pull-throughs are gone, check the listed length of whatever is left before you choose a rig to fit it.
Premium sites carry 50-amp service and standard sites 30-amp, with full hookups at select sites of each. That matters in July, when the air conditioner runs from lunch to bedtime and the hookup is the whole point of the pad. The park stays open year-round, and its cottages give a grandparent or two a real bed off the rig.
CreekFire RV Resort on Fort Argyle Road
Some families would rather unhook once and let the week happen around the rig. At CreekFire, motorhomes line a path beside the lake, kids split the afternoon between the lazy river and the pool, and the fishing dock belongs to whoever gets up first. There's a restaurant on site for the night nobody wants to cook.
Sites come back-in or pull-through, all with full hookups at 20, 30, or 50 amps on city water and sewer. Buddy sites put two rigs from the same group side by side, which is how two families share a week without splitting the campfire.
Getting downtown without moving the rig is the easy part. The resort's blog describes a shuttle to the Old Town Trolley, reserved at the front desk 24 hours ahead, so ask whether it's running when you book (as of October 2026). For a first night closer in, Red Gate Farms RV Resort, family-owned since 1931, bills itself as the closest RV park to the historic district.
Jekyll Island campground and Driftwood Beach
The coast run goes south on I-95 into the Golden Isles, and Jekyll Island is where the rig settles for a few nights. The campground sits under oaks heavy with Spanish moss at the edge of the maritime forest, half a mile from Driftwood Beach and the Clam Creek fishing pier. Bikes cover the ride out to the bleached, tangled trunks on the sand, and the pier fills the evening for anyone with a rod.
The campground has 216 full-hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp service, water, and sewer, in back-in and pull-through layouts, though none sit on the water. The island's page posts no maximum rig length as of October 2026, so read each site's description for length when you book through Campspot, and hold the site before you commit to a rig.
The Georgia campervan page outlines the rest of the Golden Isles coast. North across the state line, Charleston's RV page covers its own stretch of the coast, and the Georgia RV page runs through the state's lakes and event weeks inland.
