Pines shade the Rolling View loop north of Raleigh, and Falls Lake is in the site, the reservoir at the edge of camp with the picnic table looking at water. The morning is the beach and the ramp, and the afternoon stays on the water; summer heat hangs over the reservoir, which is why the trees matter.
Summer weekends fill the improved loop, where sites have electric and water, so lock the Rolling View site before you lock the van.
As of September 2026, Holly Point is closed for construction on the Falls Lake camping page. Shoulder seasons are easier.

Jordan Lake out past Apex is Holly Springs's overnight, and Kerr Lake is Durham's.
William B. Umstead State Park
You hike and bike William B. Umstead State Park through pine and hardwood on mostly flat trail. A jet from RDU is often the only sound that breaks the quiet. Horseback trails share the same corridor, so you can spend a full day in the woods without leaving town. Cary and Wake Forest are on this side of the city.
The Crabtree Creek Family Campground reopened in 2026 with tent and RV sites after a renovation, so a day hike can turn into an overnight. Some sites are non-electric, and some have water, power, and septic, so match the van to the pad. Book it if you arrive late and do not want to find Rolling View in the dark.
Do not plan a winter night here. The campground season still runs early April through late October.
The fairgrounds RV campground off I-40 is the other in-town full-hookup loop, and it closes for the whole of October for the State Fair, so the fair itself has no overnight.
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park
You stand on the overlook at Cliffs of the Neuse, toward Goldsboro, and look down a banded face of sand, clay, and shell that drops to the river. You come for the layers in the bluff, then you swim in the river at the bottom. The campground is up in the trees, so the day is down to the river and back, and you sleep in the park.
The family campground stays open all year, and some of those sites have full hookups. Summer hookup nights still book up.
The coast is a different trip, North Carolina's southern shore and the Outer Banks.
