Race night at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Concord is the Charlotte Motor Speedway town, with race-weekend camping for the Coca-Cola 600 and the ROVAL and a year-round campground at the track for every other night. Badin Lake in Uwharrie National Forest and Morrow Mountain State Park are the lake and ridge weekends when the oval is dark. July and August are Morrow Mountain nights, when Badin Lake's shoreline sites have no electric.

Concord campervan weekends at the Speedway and the Uwharries

The Coca-Cola 600 fills Concord on Memorial Day weekend, the Charlotte Motor Speedway infield a camp of vans and rigs pressed to the banking while the Cup field runs under the lights. October brings the ROVAL, a road-course Cup race, and the same infield fills again, the same rows, the same noise. Neighbors cook in the next site over, and the oval stays lit well after the checkered flag.

Camping World Racing Resort is the speedway's own campground, open year-round with full hookups off I-85, and it takes camping units built in 2000 or later, so check the listing's model year. On a quiet week those pads are the in-town overnight, useful if you are heading into Uwharrie National Forest the next day.

On a Cup weekend you lock the infield first on the speedway's event camping maps for the Coca-Cola 600 or the ROVAL. You book the van second, because those weekends sell out.

If a race-weekend crew needs more bunks than a campervan, look at North Carolina RV rentals; the site is still the first booking.

Uwharrie National Forest

Badin Lake Campground is pine shade on the shoreline, water through the trees and the forest coming down to camp. The sites have no electric, and the campground stays open year-round. Spring and fall are the comfortable nights on that water.

The Uwharrie Trail is the walk from camp, a rocky ridgeline through the forest. The full Uwharrie National Recreation Trail runs 29 miles, so you hike a stretch and come back to the van on the lake. Reserve Badin Lake Campground through Recreation.gov.

Morrow Mountain State Park

The summit road switchbacks up from the river valley, a slow climb that keeps opening until the overlook. From there you get the Yadkin bend and Lake Tillery, water after the trees. Below that road, the campground has trailer and RV sites with electric hookups on some pads, along the Yadkin River State Trail and the Lake Tillery shore.

In July and August this is the overnight over Badin Lake, when you want a hookup for the heat. The rest of the year both campgrounds are easy. Morrow is the one with the mountain road and the view.

Reed Gold Mine is the day from Concord, a guided tour into the underground shaft. You go in on foot, you come back out, and you sleep at Morrow or back at the speedway. Kannapolis, Salisbury, and Albemarle are the towns around this side of the trip.

Lake Norman is a Charlotte overnight.
