Kerr Lake shoreline from Durham

The overnight is Kerr Lake on the Virginia line. River days go to the Eno Cascades and Occoneechee Mountain, and Medoc Mountain takes full hookups through winter. Summer lake weekends fill, so the site is the first booking.

Kerr Lake and Eno River in a Durham campervan

Open reservoir water fills the view from a Kerr Lake shoreline site, with a boat ramp at the same access and the Corps lake stretching north across the Virginia line. You pick one of the access-area loops spread around the reservoir and stay put.

A summer weekend here is a full loop and a buggy night on the water, and weekdays stay quieter. The campgrounds are tied to the ramps, so you launch, spend the day on the reservoir, and come back to a van that never left the shore.

Toward Henderson, Kerr Lake's campgrounds run late March through late October. As of September 2026, Bullocksville and Kimball Point are the loops that take a van overnight, listed on the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area page. Some sites take a tent, a trailer, or an RV, and some of those have electric and water.

Lock that reserved site before you book the van, especially for a summer weekend. A ramp parking space is not the overnight.

Falls Lake is Raleigh's overnight, and Jordan Lake is Holly Springs's.

Eno River State Park and Occoneechee Mountain

The walk at the Cascades follows the Eno over rock ledges, swift and shallow, a river day between Kerr Lake nights. The water stays close the whole way.

Occoneechee Mountain, toward Hillsborough, climbs past an old quarry pond to a summit view at sunset. There is no van camping on the mountain.

Camping at Eno River is backpack-only, so the van stays at Kerr Lake. As of September 2026 the Cole Mill access is closed.

Medoc Mountain State Park

Little Fishing Creek runs under a low ridge at Medoc Mountain, with open meadow around the campground. You come for the creek and the meadow, and for a pad that stays open when Kerr Lake's season ends. The night is inland, grass and water at the edge of the loop.

Full-hookup sites have electricity and sewer. If your group needs more sleeping space than a campervan, look at Durham RV rentals; those pads take them.

Duke Gardens and Duke Forest

Formal terraced gardens at Duke take a campus morning between Kerr Lake nights. The garden lot fills early on a nice day, and there is no camping at the gardens or in Duke Forest.

Duke Forest's graveled fire trails take a walk or a bike. Chapel Hill is next door on the map.
