Bison and longhorns graze the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge outside Lawton, loose on granite and mixed-grass prairie below Mount Scott. You drive Mount Scott Road to the top and look out over the range, a granite dome with prairie running out under it. After the summit, the refuge roads are the rest of the day, slow driving across granite and grass.
Medicine Park is the cobblestone town at the refuge gate. Streets and buildings were built from red creek granite, so you can walk the town and the range on the same rock in the same day.
Stay at Doris Campground when you want the refuge in the morning. Every site is reservation-only through Recreation.gov, so lock the pad before you lock the van. As of September 2026 hiking is limited to sunrise through 10am in the heat, while roads stay open to vehicles and bicycles and Doris, fishing, and picnicking keep normal hours.
Sulphur and Davis are next, springs and a waterfall in the Arbuckles.
The Arbuckles, Chickasaw, and Turner Falls
You come for the swimming holes at Little Niagara, where Travertine Creek, fed by Antelope and Buffalo Springs, runs over a travertine ledge. Stay in Chickasaw National Recreation Area at Sulphur so the creek is right there in the morning.
The Platt Historic District campgrounds beside the springs fit only small rigs, Rock Creek at 25 feet or less and Cold Springs under 20 feet. The Lake of the Arbuckles campgrounds take larger vans, a mix of reservable and first-come sites, with Guy Sandy closed as of September 2026. If you need more sleeping space than a van, look at Oklahoma RV rentals and use the lake campgrounds.
At Davis, Turner Falls is a waterfall into a swimming hole at the foot of the Arbuckles. People spend the day in that pool, then walk up to the rock castle on the grounds. The park's RV sites have water and electric hookups.
Beavers Bend State Park is the pine river overnight farther east.
Lake Thunderbird State Park
Lake Thunderbird State Park at Norman is a red-clay reservoir with marinas and swim beaches. Camping is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in designated areas, with full hookups on the RV loops. Use it for the first night when you want water close to Oklahoma City.
The Outdoor Symbolic Memorial is the outdoor grounds of the Oklahoma City National Memorial, open day and night. Bricktown is the dining and entertainment district next to it.
Arcadia Lake is Edmond's overnight, on the north side of the metro.
SooneRVillage for Sooners home games
The night before a home game, vans and rigs pack the asphalt lot on the west side of Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. OU Athletics sells those RV spaces at SooneRVillage with hookups, water, and a dump station, about a mile from the stadium. Reserve the space before you book the van.
