The Mountain Fork runs clear over gravel just below Broken Bow Lake's dam, pine and hardwood holding both ridges, and you paddle that stretch and sleep in Beavers Bend State Park. Camping areas are back in the same woods, yurts and cabins mixed among the van pads, and Hochatown next door is the cabin town.
Lock the Beavers Bend site before the van. As of September 2026, the park takes every RV and tent site online and doesn't run a walk-up loop.
Talimena Scenic Drive and Robbers Cave State Park
West of Beavers Bend, you pull off Rich Mountain, then Winding Stair, each turnout another view across the Ouachita National Forest. The Oklahoma stretch of the Talimena National Scenic Byway runs 36 miles from Talihina toward Mena as of September 2026, and there are no gas stations on the route. Fall color typically peaks the last week of October through the first week of November, and that's when the byway and the campgrounds on this corridor compete for the same weekend.
Sleep at Robbers Cave State Park, where sandstone bluffs break at a cave mouth in the Sans Bois Mountains. Talimena State Park at the Talihina end of the drive is the other overnight on this road. Robbers Cave also keeps an equestrian campground if that is the pad you reserved.
Lake Murray State Park at Ardmore
At Ardmore, Lake Murray wraps a forested shoreline around the water, stone CCC cabins back in the trees. TravelOK calls it Oklahoma's first and largest state park, as of September 2026, and the van pads include pull-throughs with full hookups. Some campgrounds are gated.
If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, look at Oklahoma RV rentals; those pull-throughs take them.
Black Mesa State Park in the Panhandle
In the Panhandle, shortgrass prairie meets the Rockies at a flat mesa, and the sky over Black Mesa State Park is unusually dark. The van sleeps at the park next to Lake Carl Etling, not on the summit. August is when the Perseids pull people to the park, but the dark holds all year.
Oklahoma's high point is a long day hike from a trailhead well away from that campground. Summer heat on the mesa makes it a spring or fall walk.
The Great Salt Plains and Little Sahara State Park
You walk out onto the Great Salt Plains across white salt that has cracked like dry mud, hourglass selenite under the crust. You sleep at Salt Plains State Park, eco-cabins and RV pads alike.
Farther northwest, Little Sahara State Park at Waynoka is a rippled dune field where ATVs work the sand. RV sites there include water, electric, and sewer, and as of September 2026 there is a day riding fee bought at the park office. July and August on those dunes get brutally hot.
Oklahoma City, Edmond, and Tulsa
For the Wichita Mountains and the Arbuckles, go to Oklahoma City. Edmond is Arcadia Lake and Roman Nose. Tulsa is Keystone and the Illinois River.
South of Ardmore the drive continues toward Dallas. The Talimena Scenic Drive already points into Arkansas. North of the salt plains, Wichita is the next city page. West of Black Mesa, New Mexico takes over.
