Jetty Park is the last land before the Atlantic on the south side of the Port Canaveral channel, and the campground sits close enough to the water that you are standing on sand a couple of minutes after you shut the van door. Cruise ships come out through the channel in the afternoons, near enough from the fishing pier to read the names off the hulls. When a launch is on the schedule the pier and the beach fill up with people who drove in for the evening, and you are already there with a chair. Get the pad before you get the van. Jetty Park is the scarce half of a Space Coast week, and the van is the booking that can still be moved.
The days out there are simple. You walk out along the rock jetty in the morning, swim off the beach that runs south from it, and come back to the site when the sun gets serious. Surfers work the sandbar on the south side of the jetty and the fishing pier is busy from before sunrise, so there is somewhere to be at both ends of the day without moving the van.
That is the shape of the whole week. The van stays at the port and everything else is a day trip, because the beach at the campground is the thing you came for and the rest of this coast is short driving.
Peak season at the campground runs November 15 through April 15 (Port Canaveral, as of August 2026), which is also when the improved loops go first. Summer is hot and wet here, and the afternoon storms are regular enough to plan the day around.
Kennedy Space Center is the day trip
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the day you spend away from the beach. A Saturn V hangs over the room at the Apollo center, the orbiter Atlantis sits in the next building with its payload bay open, and both are bigger than any photograph makes them look. It is a full day on foot and it is indoors, which is the argument for saving it for the hottest day of the week.
Playalinda and the beach north of the Cape
North of the pads the development stops. Canaveral National Seashore is undeveloped barrier island with nothing behind the dune line, and Playalinda is the beach at its south end, reached from the Titusville side.
You cannot sleep there. RV and vehicle camping is not permitted anywhere within the seashore (National Park Service, as of August 2026), so Playalinda is a day and Jetty Park is still the night. The north end of the seashore, Apollo Beach and the New Smyrna side, is an easier run from Daytona Beach.
Sebastian Inlet State Park when Jetty Park is full
Sebastian Inlet State Park is south of Melbourne where the inlet cuts through the barrier island, and it is the state-park fallback when the port campground has nothing left in peak season. The north jetty is a well-known surf break, so the day-use lot fills early when there is swell.
Booking Jetty Park with a rental van
Kennedy Space Center and Playalinda are day trips, and a day trip takes whatever day you hand it. The pad is the part that has to be settled before everything else, because the beach at the campground is the reason for the week and there is no version of it where you sort that out on arrival.
Jetty Park is a Canaveral Port Authority campground, and the rules are written around RVs. No RV campsite there can be held without a camping unit on it carrying an RVIA sticker, and the improved loops run 95 sites with water, electric and sewer, 62 of them on 50 amp and 33 on 30 amp, with semi-rustic and water-only sites behind them (Port Canaveral, as of August 2026). The sticker is the pad rule rather than paperwork, so a camping unit without one does not hold the site. Get a picture of it from the owner before you book the van.
A launch on the schedule moves both halves of the trip at once. The reserved pads at Jetty Park and the vans sitting at homes around Melbourne get spoken for by the same people planning the same week at the port, so the night and the vehicle go together rather than one at a time. The campground is hard to get in any case: the port's own answer to why it always looks full is that it books many months out, and it tells people to reserve a year ahead or take the slower stretch from July to September (Port Canaveral, as of August 2026).
Book the week, not the date. Launch dates slip on weather and range problems constantly, and a site you already hold turns a scrub into an inconvenience instead of a wasted drive.
