Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka, north of Orlando, keeps 60 campsites back in longleaf pine. Get the site before you get the van. Wekiwa closes when it reaches capacity, and between Memorial Day and Labor Day it reaches capacity, often before lunch, so holding a campsite is how you are already inside the boundary when the gate shuts behind everyone else. The van comes second, and it is the booking you can still change.
Every site is wooded, with water and an electrical hook-up, a fire ring with a grill, and a picnic table. Some add sewer, there is a dump station in the campground, and the sites take recreational vehicles up to 50 feet, so length is never the problem a campervan runs into here.
The spring itself comes up at the foot of a sandhill, clear enough to count the shells on the bottom. It sits at 72 degrees in January and 72 degrees in August, which is the whole argument for driving out there instead of using the hotel pool. Steps drop you into a swimming area that widens downstream and becomes the head of the Wekiva River.
There are no lifeguards, and no diving or jumping, because the water where everyone gets in is shallow. Swimming runs from 8 a.m. until half an hour before the park closes, and snorkeling is not permitted in Wekiwa Springs Run, Rock Springs Run, or the Wekiva River.
Black bears are native to the park, so food and trash go back in the van overnight. The primitive river camps, Otter Camp and Big Buck, are canoe and kayak access only, which makes them a good paddle and not somewhere the van follows. The park has had construction work in the campground during business hours since June 2026, though the bathhouse is not affected.
Kelly Park is the other end of the same water. The Rock Springs run comes out between 68 and 72 degrees and people float the length of it on tubes, which is a morning, not an overnight. Orange County charges $5 per vehicle and holds the lot to 280 cars in the morning plus another 50 after 1 p.m., as of August 2026, so a late start in summer means you do not get in at all.
Theme park days and the campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness
Fort Wilderness is 750 acres of pine and cypress across Bay Lake from Magic Kingdom, and it is the only place on Walt Disney World property where the bed is your own vehicle. Buses run from the campground loops to the theme parks, the water parks, and Disney Springs, and a water launch crosses to Magic Kingdom. You check in at 4510 North Fort Wilderness Trail in Lake Buena Vista.
Site type is the decision that matters. The Tent or Pop-Up Campsite is the one written for a pop-up camper or a camper van-type vehicle, with room for up to 2 tents on a concrete pad up to 10 feet by 25 feet and a maximum of 8 guests. That is the campervan slot.
The sites with a sewage hook-up are longer. Full Hook-Up pads run up to 10 by 50 feet, Preferred pads up to 10 by 45 and sit close to the marina, and both Premium categories, Premium and Premium Meadow, take an 18 by 60 pad. Every category sleeps up to 8 adults, and all of them come with water and electric, a picnic table, a charcoal grill, and wifi. If the group needs more beds than a van has, those longer pads are what an RV rental in Orlando is sized for.
Which pad you land decides which vehicle fits, so settle the site before you shortlist vans. A Tent or Pop-Up is a different rental from a 10 by 50 Full Hook-Up. The parks themselves are never an overnight for the vehicle, since theme park parking is sold by the day. The van sleeps on the pad, and the buses and the water launch are how you get to the gates and back.
Two things catch people out. The Cabins at Fort Wilderness are a hotel product on the same land, so book a campsite, not a cabin, when the van is the bed. And Universal Orlando has no campground on its property, so a Universal day is a drive in and a drive back to wherever the van slept.
Where the van goes after Orlando
Orlando sits near the middle of the peninsula, which puts both coasts within a morning. Port Canaveral and the launch coast are covered on the Melbourne page.
