Locals loop Kennesaw Mountain after work, and you fall in behind them. The trail starts in the trees and keeps climbing. The ridge is open, the city is out there, and the heat sits on you even in April.
The earthworks on Kennesaw Mountain run the ridge, cannons set along the line, past gun positions and cuts in the dirt that still read as a battlefield. Walk it and at the top the ground flattens into an overlook about 1,800 feet up, and the Atlanta skyline shows up as a low smear on the horizon. On a clear day you can pick out the downtown buildings, and the ridge feels higher than it looks from town. You keep walking the ridge after that first look at the skyline, and interpretive signs follow the fighting down the slope.
On a summer afternoon the humidity makes the climb slow. Fall and spring are the days this hike feels easy, and either way you are off the mountain before dark.
You cannot overnight here. The National Park Service opens the grounds at 6:30 a.m., closes them at 6:30 p.m. from November through March and at 8:30 p.m. during daylight saving, and tickets and tows a vehicle left after posted closing. On weekends, as of September 2026, Kennesaw Mountain Drive is closed to personal vehicles and bicycles, and a shuttle runs the summit road instead.

Red Top Mountain State Park on Lake Allatoona
The improved loop at Red Top Mountain State Park sits on a wooded point in Acworth, with Allatoona on three sides. You can see water from the site, and the marina docks and the sand swim beach are the rest of that same shoreline. Morning on the point is water and boat noise from the marina. After the ridge hike, this is the easy half of the day on the water.
This is the first night out of Marietta, the closest reservable pad on the lake. Book the site before the van. Weekend dates go early, and the Georgia State Parks reservation portal opens them up to 14 months ahead.
The van belongs on the improved sites, the ones with electric, water, and sewer hookups and a few pull-throughs. Walk-in tent pads are a different stay. Georgia summer is heat and humidity, and the hookups on the improved loop are how you sleep through that. The park stays open year-round, 7 a.m. to dark, and a ParkPass is paid once per vehicle per stay. If Red Top is full, McKaskey Creek and the other Corps campgrounds on Allatoona take the overflow.

Awnings and grills come out in the RV lot before first pitch, with the ballpark sitting right past the fence. It sells in advance only, and there is no same-day purchase. Home games run roughly April through September, the same months Allatoona is busiest for swimming and boats. Those weekends compete for the same vans and the same lake sites, so a Braves night and a Red Top night are one plan.
