At dusk the lawn at Stone Mountain fills for the laser show, and the granite face of the dome is the screen. The campground sits between that rock and the lake, with the trees along the shore and the granite close enough that you open the door in the morning onto the same face the crowd watched the night before. This is the close overnight out of Atlanta, the first night before the mountains or the whole weekend on the rock.
The walk-up trail leaves the woods and switchbacks up bare granite, with no shade on the upper slope. The lake stays below you the whole climb, a dark oval at the foot of the rock, and from the top the metro sits in the haze. Sleep in the park and a morning walk-up starts from the van, so you are on the granite before the lawn fills and back at the loop while the rock is still heating up.
Summer at the lake is hot and humid, and a hookup for the air conditioner does more for a van night than a shady pad when you are sleeping next to that water. The campground is large, over 400 sites across RV, pop-up, and tent, and it books through Campspot, so lock a site before you book the van, especially on summer weekends and in October when those loops fill. If the RV loops are sold out, Stone Mountain also rents yurts in the same campground. If you need more sleeping space than a van bunk, Atlanta RV rentals are the size-up.
Sweetwater Creek State Park is the close-in day stop for the New Manchester mill ruins on the creek, a roofless brick shell beside the water, with overnight limited to yurts and walk-in tent sites with no RV hookups.
Vogel State Park, Unicoi, and Blue Ridge
The mountain weekend out of Atlanta runs through Vogel State Park near Blairsville, Unicoi outside Helen, and Blue Ridge, the next overnight after the dome when you want ridges and a mountain lake. Vogel sits above Trahlyta Lake, the campground looking down on the water with a ridge line wrapping the bowl. From the pads the lake is the thing you see, the ridge on the far side holding it in. Pads at Vogel run electric and water, with reservations through Georgia State Parks, and a ParkPass is required.
Helen is the next town on that run, with Unicoi State Park and Lodge just outside it. The dock on Unicoi Lake has the tree-covered slopes behind it, the other mountain lake on this weekend. As of September 2026 the lodge campground lists 48 RV sites with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer.
October is leaf season at Unicoi and along this whole loop, so book the mountain pad ahead of that window the same way you book Stone Mountain. Blue Ridge is the mountain-town add-on, a downtown strip of storefronts with the Blue Ridge range behind the buildings, and you sleep at Vogel or Unicoi and drive in for the afternoon so you get the town without moving the van to a third overnight. Vogel sits at about 2,500 feet, and winter can put snow or ice on the approach roads above 2,000 feet, which the metro never sees and this loop sometimes does.
