Nights on Rangeley Lake start at the water, with Saddleback Mountain on the far shore. You paddle and fish that water, then sleep beside it. ME-17 from Rumford climbs to Height of Land, where Mooselookmeguntic Lake opens and the western mountains recede, and ME-4 from Farmington is the other way in. Rangeley is a stay-and-paddle week, and the van can sit while you paddle.
You stay at Rangeley Lake State Park. Sites there have electric and water hookups, showers, and an RV dump across 50 campsites. Book the pad before the van, early May through mid-October. Maine state parks open the whole season's sites on one morning in early February, as of 2026, so the pad comes before the van. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan bunk, an RV rental in Maine uses those same hookup sites.
Down the same western mountains, the campground at Webb Lake in Mount Blue State Park is wooded in Maine's largest state park. The park stays open year-round and collects a fee through winter, and camping is not allowed on the adjoining Tumbledown Public Land. Route 156 from Wilton and Route 142 from Dixfield are the roads in.
Grafton Notch is the mountain day from either campground, with Mother Walker Falls cutting a V through the rock and Old Speck's summit fire tower over the Mahoosuc Range. Camping is not permitted in the park, which is day-use from mid-May through mid-October.
Cobscook Bay and Lubec
Low tide at Cobscook Bay pulls the water back until the mudflats show, then the bay fills again. The tidal range averages 24 feet and can reach 28. You walk the flats at low tide and you are back at camp before the water returns. Campsites sit on Whiting Bay for tents and RVs.
Camping starts in mid-May. As of September 2026, campsites 1 through 27 have no electrical power, though drinking water still runs. The park is on US-1 south of Dennysville.
In Lubec, West Quoddy Head Light wears candy stripes over black gabbro cliffs, with Grand Manan Island across the channel. Quoddy Head State Park is day-use from mid-May through mid-October, with no camping, on South Lubec Road off Route 189.
Aroostook State Park and the Allagash
Echo Lake has a beach under Quaggy Jo Mountain's two peaks, off US-1 south of Presque Isle. Aroostook State Park, Maine's first state park from 1939, is primitive camping and day-use on that shore. As of September 2026 the RV dump station is not available, and you bring drinking water. Reserve a site before you drive up.
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a canoe corridor reached on private logging roads, with paddle-in campsites. Thoreau camped near Eagle Lake in 1857, and the van stays at Aroostook.
Acadia, Bangor, and Portland
