Arch after arch opens along the cliff line in Red River Gorge, and the climbing routes follow the same rock. You sleep on a wooded ridge above the overlooks, close enough that after dark the gorge is mostly sound. The Gorge is Kentucky's climbing and hiking corridor, a week on that sandstone rather than a day at one arch.
The Nada Tunnel is the drive in to the Gorge. It is a single lane cut through the rock, dark enough that people turn the headlights on at noon.
Trail and forest road keep going well beyond the arches, all of it Daniel Boone National Forest. Natural Bridge State Resort Park shares that rock, a 78-foot sandstone arch and about 22 miles of trail. The Whittleton campground is the improved loop for a first night, the Natural Bridge overnight on the resort-park side of the Gorge.
Deeper in the Gorge, Koomer Ridge is the Forest Service campground, primitive pads under the trees and no hookups. October is the busiest camping stretch of the year here, and Whittleton and Koomer Ridge both fill on color weekends. Whittleton reservations have to be made at least two days ahead as of September 2026. Eastern Kentucky summers run hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms the ridge barely cools.
Stay another night on the ridge before you leave the sandstone. A second night there beats a same-day push west to the falls and the lakes.
Lake Cumberland and Cumberland Falls
Cumberland Falls drops a 125-foot curtain of water into a boulder gorge. On a clear night around the full moon, a lunar moonbow stands in the mist. The curtain is loud in the afternoon and a different place after dark.
Ridgeline Campground is the hookup loop above the river, Clifty the small primitive one. Reservations need a guest 21 or older.
Lake Cumberland is more than 60,000 acres of open water. Houseboats work the coves, a different trip from sleeping in the van. The campervan night is on shore at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, and primitive camping there stays open year-round.
Give the falls a night around the moonbow window and the lake a night on the water. That south-central stretch is a separate Kentucky week from the Gorge.
Land Between the Lakes
Elk and bison graze a tallgrass prairie between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, a paved loop you drive in an enclosed vehicle at the Elk and Bison Prairie. The rest of the ridge is forest and lake shore.
Four full-service campgrounds take the overnight, running roughly March through November. Hillman Ferry is the big one, from tents to large motorhomes, with reservations from two days to six months ahead as of September 2026. Book that loop if you want the prairie drive in the morning and a full-service pad at night. Land Between the Lakes is the western edge of the Kentucky week. You reach it after the Gorge and the south-central lakes. Tennessee is the next state south.
Mammoth Cave, bourbon country, and northern Kentucky
Cave country at Mammoth Cave National Park is a Bowling Green trip. Sleep there if the cave system is why you came. From that side of the state, Nashville is the next city south.
Bourbon country and Derby week in May belong on the Louisville page. Distillery days and the race crowd share those city overnights. The pads for that week are around the city, not at the Gorge or the lakes.
Northern Kentucky, Big Bone Lick, the Ark Encounter, and a day across the river belong on the Covington page. That is a Cincinnati-side trip, not a Gorge week. The crossing itself is the Cincinnati page, and Indiana is the next state north.
