Prairie grass thins into limestone above Joe Pool Lake. The DORBA singletrack runs that ground through cross-timbers, a dirt line between leftover prairie and the reservoir. Dallas weekends spend the night on the shoreline below at Cedar Hill State Park. You come off the dirt, walk down to the water, and sleep in the same park.
Cedar Hill is the closest state park night to Dallas, 20 miles from downtown on Joe Pool Lake. Riders and hikers share the dirt in the hills above the reservoir. Trails close when they are wet, so call ahead if it has rained.
The campground has full-hookup and water-and-electric loops near restrooms with hot showers. A campervan needs one of those hookup loops, not a hike-in tent site. In summer the hookup is how you run the air conditioner. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, look at RV rentals in Texas.
Most overnight reservations open up to five months in advance. Cedar Hill often reaches capacity, so lock the campsite before you book the van.
Joe Pool Lake has another campground on the far shore at Loyd Park in Grand Prairie. That night belongs to Arlington.
Lake Tawakoni State Park
Oak forest comes down to the water at Lake Tawakoni State Park, a small campground on a big reservoir 50 miles east of Dallas. The shoreline trail runs nearly five miles through the trees, and the oaks keep the loops in shade. This is the quieter second night after Cedar Hill.
The park books full-hookup and water-and-electric sites. As of September 2026, a burn ban was in effect, with no open fires and contained-fuel stoves or enclosed grills still allowed, so check before you count on a fire ring. The same alert flags permitted-hunt closures that can shut the park for a few days.
Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma is the other lake night in this direction, and it belongs to McKinney. North of there, Oklahoma City is the highway continuation.
White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum
Inside Dallas, you park at White Rock Lake and walk. A paved loop runs past picnic pavilions from the CCC years along the water, city on one side and lake on the other. As of September 2026, part of the loop between E. Lawther Drive and Winsted Drive was closed for a wastewater-main repair, with a signed detour.
The Dallas Arboretum fills the southeast shore with gardens, open daily with a few holiday closures. Walk the gardens, then drive back to Cedar Hill or Tawakoni to sleep.
Fort Worth is the adjacent metro with its own trip, for a weekend on that side of town.
