The Itusi Trail comes off the pine ridge with water showing on both sides of the peninsula, and Lake Norman's campground is on that same point, so the bike, the swim beach, and the overnight share the same shore. In summer the air is thick enough that you want power at the pad.
Book the paved loop with electric, water, and sewer hookups through North Carolina State Parks before you book the van. St. Johns Road is the campground entrance, and it stays open overnight. The park is in Iredell County, on the water Charlotte uses for a lake weekend.
McDowell Nature Preserve
South of town, McDowell Nature Preserve puts the overnight on Lake Wylie, at a Catawba River bend inside a county preserve. Drive-up sites and RV sites are on that shoreline. You stay in south Charlotte, and the evening is a walk through the preserve.
Reserve through Mecklenburg County's ActiveNet system. The campground is the county overnight on this shoreline. Crowders Mountain is the day hike for a quartzite pinnacle and cliff line, with no drive-up or van camping at the park.
South Mountains State Park
The Jacob Fork cuts a gorge through South Mountains State Park, rock and river at the main access. The campground is on that same road. As of September 2026 the High Shoals Falls Loop is closed for storm repair, with no reopening date.
Trailer and RV sites at Jacob Fork include some with electric hookups, booked through North Carolina State Parks. You come here when you want woods and river after a lake night.
Kings Mountain
Across the line, the Kings Mountain ridge is a Revolutionary War battlefield, forested Piedmont with CCC stonework in the trees. Two small fishing lakes, Crawford and York, lie in the state park below it. You walk the ridge by day and sleep in the state park campground.
Sleep on packed-gravel pads with water and electric hookups. Several sites take rigs up to 40 feet, and the minimum stay is two nights. If you need more length or more sleeping space, look at RVs for rent in North Carolina.
Camping inside the national military park is a hike-in backcountry site, so overnight vehicles use the state park campground. For a longer run across the line, keep going with campervans in South Carolina.
Carowinds
A Carowinds weekend sleeps at Camp Wilderness, the park's own campground, with coasters on the skyline over a paved RV loop by the gate. Sites take rigs up to 45 feet with water, sewer, and electric.
Uptown, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is the indoor city day. Race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway and camping in the Uwharries belong to Concord. Mooresville, Gastonia, Hickory, and Statesville are the other towns on the same map.
