Brandywine Falls drops over a sandstone ledge into a hemlock gorge, and the boardwalk overlook is where you stand to watch it. The gorge holds the water and the hemlocks, and it stays cooler than the rest of the valley on a summer afternoon. A Cleveland trip into Cuyahoga Valley National Park starts right there, then stays on foot for the rest of the day.
The Ledges Trail squeezes through a narrow sandstone corridor, rocky underfoot, with steps in the rock. Shoulders in, walls close, it is a slow walk. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath follows the old canal on crushed limestone, flat and firm when you want an easy line for a longer stretch. As of September 2026, a stretch of the Towpath at Boston is closed for boardwalk replacement into November, and Ice Box Cave stays closed because of white-nose syndrome in the bats.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad uses the same valley floor. Explorer trips let you ride one way and bike, hike, or paddle the rest of the park. Trails keep going past the park boundary into Cleveland Metroparks and Summit Metroparks toward Akron, so a day can start at the falls and finish on a city path without changing where you sleep.
Cuyahoga Valley has no campground and prohibits overnight parking. West Branch State Park is the closest campground on the Park Service's own table, with full hookups and reservations up to six months ahead. Punderson State Park is the farther alternative if West Branch is already gone.
Lock the West Branch site first, then book the van. Summer is the season that needs that order, when the valley is busy and hookup pads go early. From November through April, West Branch cuts potable water and keeps fewer sites open. If you need more sleeping space than a van bunk, look at Cleveland RV rentals; those full-hookup pads take them.
Grand River wine country and Geneva-on-the-Lake
Vineyard rows cover the ridge above Lake Erie, east of Cleveland and north of Youngstown. At harvest the tasting-room porches fill, a slow drive between pours, then back to the shore for the night.
Geneva State Park puts full-hookup sites on the Lake Erie shore at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Reserve that pad first. From November through March the campground runs reduced off-peak service.
Headlands Beach at Mentor
Headlands Beach State Park at Mentor is a dune-backed crescent of sand on Lake Erie, with no lifeguards. The state park page calls it the largest natural sand beach in Ohio, and it is day use only. There is no campground on the sand, so you come for the water and sleep at West Branch or Geneva. The Lake Erie islands and Cedar Point are Ohio's.
The Rock Hall and West Side Market
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame puts a glass pyramid on the Lake Erie shoreline downtown.
The West Side Market has been Cleveland's public market hall since 1912, with producer stalls inside the brick. South of Cleveland, Mohican State Park and Amish Country are Canton's.
