A Canton weekend sleeps on the rim of Clear Fork Gorge, hemlock and old-growth white pine on the walls, a red covered bridge on the river below. The stone decks at Mohican State Park put you over that drop. Canoes and tubes go in at the Loudonville liveries along State Route 3 and drift the river you were just watching.
The covered bridge went up in 1968, built from the state forest's own hardwoods. From the water it is the span you slide under after the Loudonville put-in. Walk the rim after you take out and you get the gorge from the top, the river and the bridge still down there, a full day that never leaves Mohican.
The campground takes full hookup, electric, and non-electric sites. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, look at Ohio RV rentals; those pads take them. Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill at Mohican and at the lake parks, so lock the overnight before you book the van.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame
Bronze busts line the rotunda, one for each enshrinee, facing the center of the room. You walk that ring, then the rest of the museum, and that is a Canton afternoon. When you are done, you drive back to Mohican or one of the lake parks.
Enshrinement Week in early August fills lodging in town and the gorge sites with it, so lock Mohican early that week. The Hall is the day in the middle of a Mohican stay.
Holmes County Amish Country
West of Canton the hill roads of Holmes County start to climb, horse-drawn buggies in the lane and cheese and bakery stands at the verge between the towns. Berlin's shop fronts are the walkable stretch, a town you park once and do on foot. Walnut Creek is bulk food and chocolate, and Millersburg is the county seat where OH-39 meets US-62.
The Amish Country Byway runs 160 miles through this country, with Loudonville on the canoe-river end of the same loop, so the gorge overnight and the byway day can share a drive home. You can spend a slow afternoon in Berlin and still make Walnut Creek and Millersburg before you head back. The overnight stays at Mohican.
Atwood, Tappan, and Salt Fork
Atwood Lake is open water, sailboats and pontoons, marinas and a kayak launch on the shore. Tappan Lake is wooded camp loops along the shoreline, with a swimming beach. Both have full hookups through the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, and they pull weekend boaters out of Akron as well as Canton. When Mohican is full, these two are the overflow first nights.
From a Salt Fork campsite loop you look at the lake through forested hills and misty valleys. The campground is the other hookup night when Mohican is full. ODNR calls it Ohio's largest state park. As of September 2026 the beach complex is under construction, with no facilities.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a Cleveland campervan trip. Hocking Hills is a Columbus campervan trip.
