Kettle-pond camping at Nickerson State Park in Brewster puts the overnight in pine and oak that slope to the water, with the paved Cape Cod Rail Trail already in the campground. Bike days start at the loops, and the National Seashore is the salt-water day from the same base. The eight ponds are the freshwater swim without leaving the park.
You ride from the site, cook at a pond in the evening, and take the Seashore on the days you want dunes and surf. Nickerson is mid-Cape, deep enough onto the peninsula that this mix is the trip.
Massachusetts DCR lists 1,900 acres around the ponds, with more than 400 campsites. Lock the campsite before you book the van. Summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day is when the pads fill.
ReserveAmerica lists 25-35 ft back-in driveways as of September 2026. Nickerson has no hookups and books on ReserveAmerica up to four months ahead. If you need more sleeping space than those pads take, use Massachusetts RV rentals.
Race Point Beach on Cape Cod National Seashore
Cape Cod National Seashore lets self-contained vehicles camp overnight on the sand at Race Point under the ORV permit in summer. They park on open sand with no campground built around them. A cassette toilet does not count as self-contained.
Cape Cod National Seashore never permits rental vehicles on the ORV corridor, with no exceptions, as of September 2026. A rented campervan does not get that night. The Seashore is a day from Nickerson. Wellfleet is the Seashore beach town between Nickerson and Race Point.
Shawme-Crowell State Forest in Sandwich
The loops at Shawme-Crowell State Forest are in the trees off the Sagamore Bridge approach, on the western end of Cape Cod in Sandwich. There are no hookups. The Cape Cod Canal is the crossing every van makes, and these loops are the first night before the mid-Cape. Shawme-Crowell stays open later into the fall than Nickerson, with weekend-only stays at the end.
There is no dump station, per ReserveAmerica, as of September 2026. Bring the tank capacity you need for the stay.
Provincetown
Whale-watch boats work off MacMillan Pier, and the Pilgrim Monument is the skyline at the tip of Cape Cod. People build a Cape day around that watch and a few hours in town, then drive back down the peninsula. Provincetown has no campground of its own.
Summer in town and the state-park weekends compete for the same vans and the same sites at Nickerson and Shawme-Crowell.
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket
The Steamship Authority runs vehicle service from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard and from Hyannis to Nantucket. The Nantucket vehicle crossing is the Traditional Service, 2 hours 15 minutes, and it wants a vehicle reservation. Nantucket prohibits overnight camping in public areas, including beaches and parks, under Chapter 64.
