The Cliff Walk is a rock ledge in Newport with Gilded Age mansion lawns inland and the ocean dropping off the other side. The stone gets slick when spray comes over the ledge, and you keep the estate grass on your left as the path follows the edge of Aquidneck Island. A fence is often all that stands between the estate grass and your shoulder.
Fort Adams is the working fort at the harbor, a same-day stop after the ledge. You tour the fort, then swim or picnic on the grounds with the bay in front of you. Sachuest Point is the lighthouse-point refuge on the east shore, still on Aquidneck Island, with wildlife viewing and fishing at the end of the same day.
A detour is in force as of September 2026 between Narragansett Avenue and Webster Street, and the city has not posted an end date. You follow the signed reroute on that stretch and keep walking the rest of the ledge. Fort Adams is day-use only, open for fort tours, swimming, and picnicking, with no overnight on the grounds.
When the island day is over, the closest state camping is inland at Bowdish Reservoir in Glocester.
George Washington Memorial Camping Area at Bowdish Reservoir
Pine cover comes down to the gravel pads on the Bowdish Reservoir shoreline in Glocester. The boat launch and swimming beach are on that same shore, so the water you camp next to is the water you use during the day. You sleep under those trees on a primitive night with no electrical hookups and water from shared spigots. The campground runs through late October, and summer is peak.
If you are driving back north after Newport, this is the night that matches the island day. Book the reservoir site before a summer weekend. If you keep going down the coast, Fishermen's Memorial and South County's campgrounds are the other overnight.
The gravel pads take a campervan, a trailer, or a larger rig. If you need more sleeping space than a van, look at RV rentals in Providence.
The town campground at Second Beach in Middletown shows up on the map with hookups, but it is open only to full-season campers through a waitlist and does not take short-term reservations. It is not a bookable weekend night.
East Bay Bike Path to Bristol
You follow the East Bay Bike Path along the water from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol. The pavement is an old rail bed, and it stays with the water until Bristol's harbor opens up. You ride it as a day from Providence and turn around in that harbor town. The path runs into Colt State Park, shoreline lawns and stone walls on the bay, a park day at the end of the ride.
Two wooden bridges are closed, and a signed detour is in place, so you stay on the marked reroute rather than those spans. Colt State Park is a marked access point on the path, day-use only, with no campground on the grounds. Lincoln Woods State Park is the close inland day, a freshwater swim on Olney Pond.
Downtown Providence is a walkable day in the city when you want to stay put. WaterFire lights the river basin from May through November, an evening in town after a day on the island or the path.
A longer run north is a Boston campervan trip. Cape Cod is the other Massachusetts handoff.
