Hike the Flatirons straight out of town: the Chautauqua and Mount Sanitas trailheads sit right at the edge of Boulder, so the van can stay put while you walk. The open space runs foothills to alpine, and the city bans camping across the system. The nights go up the canyons to the west, and Kelly Dahl, four miles south of Nederland on CO-119, is the simplest first one. Its reserved sites go on Recreation.gov and sites 1 through 20 stay first-come, so book the site first and the van second.
Eldorado Canyon
For climbing, drive southwest to Eldorado Canyon above Eldorado Springs, where more than 500 routes go up the Bastille and the Wind Tower over South Boulder Creek. You don't have to climb to use it, and the canyon trails make a short, steep day out. On Saturdays, Sundays, and summer holidays the inner canyon runs a free timed-entry vehicle reservation from May 1 through October 1 as of August 2026, on top of a parks pass; the free Eldo Shuttle from Boulder skips both on those weekend days. The park closes at dark and has no camping, so it's a day out, not a night.
Brainard Lake and the Indian Peaks
Drive up to Brainard Lake for the alpine half, a lake in a spruce bowl at about 10,600 feet with the Indian Peaks and the Continental Divide right behind it, and the Mitchell Lake and Long Lake trailheads climbing into the wilderness from there. It holds snow into July. To park inside the recreation area in summer you need a timed-entry reservation, and the 2026 season runs June 12 to October 1 with the upper lots not open until July 1; a Pawnee campground reservation waives that ticket while you're parked there.
The van sleeps at Pawnee for this one, on the east side of the lake: 47 sites, bear lockers, no hookups, and first-come spots that don't open until 2 p.m. with nowhere to wait, so don't drive up early to circle.
The Peak-to-Peak campgrounds
When Pawnee is full or still under snow, sleep on the Peak-to-Peak Byway, where the forest campgrounds line CO-119 and CO-72. Kelly Dahl is the easy one, 46 nonelectric sites on gravel loops. Camp Dick and Peaceful Valley sit farther north up CO-72 on the Middle Saint Vrain, in a meadow of aspen and mixed conifer; Camp Dick takes reservations through the summer, and Peaceful Valley is the smaller paved loop that caps vehicles at 45 feet.
For free camping, West Magnolia near Nederland allows only its marked dispersed sites, with no facilities and the roads closed to vehicles from November through May. Rainbow Lakes is the alpine overflow at 10,000 feet, 18 first-come sites and no drinking water, reached by a rough five-mile dirt road that wants high clearance.
None of these loops have hookups and the spurs run tight, so if you're weighing a van against something bigger, size up the RV options in Boulder and mind the length limits. For an electric site, Golden Gate Canyon State Park toward Golden reserves powered sites at Reverend's Ridge.
