Come to Barr Lake for the walk out to the Gazebo Boardwalk, where the trail leaves the prairie and runs into a wildlife refuge with a heron and cormorant rookery in the flooded cottonwoods. It's a day-use park open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with no campground, so plan to park the van overnight somewhere else and drive back for the birds. Book that night south at Cherry Creek in Aurora or north at St. Vrain near Firestone, whichever side of the metro you're on.
This is some of the most-storied birding ground in Colorado, watched and banded here for more than a century. Skip the 9-mile perimeter loop unless you've got the whole day; the walk everyone comes for is the 1.3 miles from the Nature Center out to the boardwalk and back. Dogs come along fine on the perimeter trail but stay out of the refuge and off the boardwalks.
Check the park page before you go, though. A dam-safety project has the Lake Loop closed on weekdays through fall 2026 and open on weekends, and as of August 2026 the shut stretch runs from the Niedrach south entrance to the Gazebo Boardwalk itself. Lose a weekday to it and you lose the walk you came for.
St. Vrain to the north, Cherry Creek to the south
The closest public campground is St. Vrain State Park near Firestone, 87 sites strung along a set of ponds with Longs Peak on the skyline, electric and full hookups, open year-round. From Brighton it's I-76 up to I-25 north and off at exit 240. Sites run $36 to $41 plus a park pass, reserved up to six months out through cpwshop.com. If you'd rather base north, St. Vrain is right next to Longmont and its campervan rentals.
South of the city, Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora keeps 135 sites open all year around an 880-acre reservoir, with a summer swim beach. It's the metro's busy one, so reserve ahead through cpwshop.com; you can't book a site at the gate. Figure $28 to $41 plus a park pass, plus a $1 daily Water Basin fee paid at the entrance. From November through March only the Abilene Loop stays open, and as of August 2026 Arapahoe County is under a Stage 2 fire ban, propane and gas only, no wood or charcoal.
Both parks take a full RV as easily as a van, so size up to Colorado RV rentals if a campervan berth runs tight for the group.
