Georgia's RV week happens on the water, in a ring of Army Corps reservoirs across the top of Atlanta: Lake Lanier to the northeast, Lake Allatoona to the northwest, and Carters Lake one more hop north into the foothills. On all three the campsites run down to the shoreline, each with its picnic table, fire ring, grill and lantern pole at the water's edge. Families back the motorhome in on a Saturday, roll the awning out over the chairs, and leave the rig right there until the next one while the kids spend the days in the lake.
Summer is when the hookup earns its keep. A Georgia July runs the air conditioner most of the day, so the site worth having has water and electric at the pad, and those lakeside sites fill on summer weekends. That makes the campsite the first booking and the rig the second.
Lake Lanier, Lake Allatoona or Carters Lake
Lanier is the big reservoir on the Chattahoochee, with Gainesville and Buford along its shore, and it's the default lake week for anyone renting out of the Atlanta suburbs. The Corps lists six campgrounds on Lanier, with 393 of their 427 sites on water and electric hookups and most of them waterfront. Dump station use is required there, as of October 2026. Which campground suits which rig, and the caps at each, are on the Atlanta RV page.
Allatoona is the closer lake on the city's northwest side, all coves and wooded points, and the Corps campgrounds there, McKinney and Payne among them, are where a rig parks for the week. Carters Lake is the step farther north for a family that has already done the other two, a mountain reservoir with the foothills right behind it. The Marietta RV page carries the campgrounds on both.
The long loop from Helen to Jekyll Island and back
When a week stretches toward two, Georgia's long trip is a circle of the state. Explore Georgia's 11-day RV itinerary opens in the mountains at Helen, with the first night at Unicoi State Park and an evening on the town's Bavarian-style main street along the Chattahoochee. It then crosses east to Augusta for a night on Clarks Hill Lake at Petersburg Campground or Elijah Clark State Park, and the Augusta RV page covers that lake for a rig.
From Augusta the road drops to Savannah, where the Savannah RV page sends rigs to the marsh campground at Fort McAllister State Park and carries the detail for the next stop south. Jekyll Island is the night people remember: pads in maritime forest under live oaks hung with Spanish moss, and a half-mile walk to the bleached trunks of Driftwood Beach. Jekyll Island Campground has full hookups on 216 of its 228 sites, with water, sewer and 30 or 50 amp service at the pad. The coast leg is the one to watch in hurricane season.
The loop turns inland after the island. Folkston is a single night at the east edge of the Okefenokee, Columbus brings the route west to the Chattahoochee again, and the last night is Stone Mountain Park Campground on Atlanta's east side. Two people who want Tallulah Gorge, the Okefenokee and the Golden Isles beaches as trips of their own, rather than one night apiece, will find them on the Georgia campervan guide, built around a smaller rig.
Race weekends at Hampton, fair week at Perry, Masters week in Augusta
On a race weekend at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, the infield fills with rigs lined up on gravel pads, and after dark the track lights wash over the awnings and the grills. The speedway's camping page lists infield and trackside sites, pull-through and back-in, with 50-amp service, water and sewer on sites as large as 25 by 50. Race weekends fall in late winter and summer, and the Hampton RV page has the camping for each.
October belongs to Perry, where the Georgia National Fair turns the fairgrounds RV campground into the busiest pad in middle Georgia for the week, and the Perry RV page covers it. April is Masters week, which fills every pad around Augusta, and the Augusta RV page sorts out where the rigs go.
These weeks compete with the ordinary ones. A race weekend or fair week pulls on the same Atlanta-area rigs and the same nearby pads as a lake weekend on those dates, so book the event site and the motorhome together, and well ahead.
Between the big dates, the same corner of the state is a quiet weekend. The waterfall at High Falls State Park near Hampton and Georgia Veterans State Park on Lake Blackshear south of Perry are the state-park nights those two pages send families to when nothing is on.
