Lake Conroe and Sam Houston National Forest

The Woodlands sits on the southern edge of Sam Houston National Forest. The usual overnights are Cagle on Lake Conroe, Huntsville State Park on Lake Raven, and Lake Livingston State Park on the wide water. Book the pad first when Friday night is the plan.

Campervan trips into the pineywoods from The Woodlands

Lake Conroe's pine-and-hardwood shore is the overnight out of The Woodlands, on the Cagle loop inside Sam Houston National Forest. The water shows through the trees from the sites, and Conroe is the town just beyond the lake. The Lone Star Hiking Trail starts in this same forest, a green tunnel of pines you can walk from the camp.

Shade holds in that corridor all day, with dirt and pine underfoot. You can walk a stretch as a day from Cagle. It crosses Sam Houston National Forest from Cleveland to Richards, through the recreation areas and past the boundary. During hunting season, overnight camping on the trail is limited to designated camps.

On weekends, lock a Cagle site before you lock the van. The two loops on Lake Conroe have full hookups, a 45-foot vehicle max on Recreation.gov, and walk-up nights when a site is not already reserved. I-45 and FM-1375 are the roads in.

Summer is when those hookups matter, because the pineywoods hold heat and humidity and you want shore power overnight. The rest of the year is easier to book.

Double Lake is the other forest overnight, an electric loop with a seasonal swim beach and a trail to Big Creek Scenic Area, on a recreation area the Civilian Conservation Corps built in 1937. The electric RV sites cap at 30 feet. If you need more length or sleeping space than the forest loops allow, look at RV rentals in The Woodlands.

Huntsville State Park on Lake Raven

Lake Raven is quiet water at sunrise, wooded banks, with Huntsville just up I-45. Alligators use the same water, and you watch the banks when you walk the shore. The overnight is the full-hookup loop, and from mid-February through Thanksgiving the park often fills.

Texas Parks and Wildlife requires a two-night minimum for Friday and Saturday nights. The park closes briefly for managed hunts in early winter. Park Road 40 off I-45 is the way in, and Houston covers the metro south of The Woodlands.

Lake Livingston State Park

Lake Livingston opens onto wide water, a fishing lake with white bass, and Livingston is the town just north of the park. You boat and fish that horizon, then come back to the trees on shore. The overnight is the full-hookup loops, Piney Shores, Red Oak, Yaupon, and Pin Oak, off Park Road 65.

Texas Parks and Wildlife requires a two-night minimum for Friday and Saturday nights. As of September 2026, the park's alert page notes temporary campsite closures for construction, so confirm the loop before you count on a specific site. East on US-190 and I-10, the next overnight belongs to Beaumont.
