Brazos Bend alligators and a Galveston coast night

The Houston nights are Brazos Bend State Park for the alligator lakes and Galveston Island State Park for a beach-side or bay-side coast night. Buffalo Bayou and Hermann Park are walking days in town, with no vehicle camping.

Houston campervan trips to Brazos Bend and the Gulf

On the boardwalks over Elm Lake, 40 Acre Lake, and Pilant Lake, you watch alligators from the trail. Live oaks and bottomland hardwood hold Gulf humidity on the levee trails, so you walk in the morning before mosquitoes and midday heat take over. Mild spring, fall, or winter days are the ones for seeing reptiles.

You sleep in the same park, on the loops at Burr Oak or Red Buckeye. The Houston Museum of Natural Science opens the George Observatory on the same grounds on clear Saturday nights. Tickets sell online only, not at the park, and a separate park day pass is required.

Burr Oak has water and 50-amp hookups, Red Buckeye water and 30-amp. FM 762 is the road in, through Needville. The park often reaches capacity, so lock the campsite first and treat the van as the second booking.

As of September 2026 a burn ban is in effect. Wood fires are off, charcoal or propane stoves only, and the same alerts page carries scheduled closures. Stephen F. Austin State Park belongs to Katy.

Galveston Island State Park

The beach-side campground is behind the dunes, with a boardwalk out to Gulf surf. The bay-side campground faces marsh and a canoe launch, roughly 1.5 miles from the beach. The Strand District and Pleasure Pier in Galveston are day trips, and you sleep in the park.

Beach-side electric sites take 20, 30, and 50 amp. Bay-side electric sites take 50 and 30 amp, and water-only sites on that side cap vehicles at 18 feet. If 18 feet is too short, or you want more sleeping space, look at Houston RV rentals.

The park often reaches capacity, especially from March through October on weekends, so reserve the pad before you go. Hurricane season can close the beach side with little notice. The bay-side pads are the fallback.

As of September 2026, some boardwalks are closed for flood damage. A water outage near some campsites is on the same alerts page, so ask park staff for the nearest tap. East along the Gulf, keep going with New Orleans.

Buffalo Bayou and Hermann Park

You walk the hike-and-bike trail at bayou level with Houston's downtown skyline overhead. Hermann Park is the other walking day, with the Hermann Park Railroad, pedal boats on McGovern Lake, and the Japanese Garden.

Buffalo Bayou Park does not offer vehicle camping, and the Water Works lot closes after park hours. Hermann Park is day use too. Sam Houston National Forest is covered from The Woodlands.
