Bison still range the west side of Prince Albert National Park, where the trees around Waskesiu Lake give way to grass in the Sturgeon River valley. The signed road to the Valleyview trails is the way in, and Parks Canada calls this one of the few free-ranging plains bison populations in Canada. The night is Beaver Glen, back at the Waskesiu townsite, with the lake shore as the easy evening.
Waskesiu is the lake townsite inside the park, shore on one side and campground loops in the trees. Parks Canada lists Highway 2 and Highway 263 as paved year-round roads in from Prince Albert.
Beaver Glen has electrical back-in sites, fully reservable through Parks Canada, with showers and an RV dump and fill on site, and it stays open mid-May through mid-October. Book the site first, then the van.
Saskatoon is the closest city with vans, and Waskesiu from there is a travel day of its own. Regina and Moose Jaw add more road before the park. The other national-park night is south, on the open prairie.
Grasslands National Park and Frenchman Valley
At dusk the Frenchman River valley is open grass, and Frenchman Valley Campground is the West Block overnight. Parks Canada calls the preserve one of the darkest dark sky preserves in Canada. You check in at the Val Marie visitor centre, then take an electrical or pull-through site, fully reservable.
Fill the van's water tank before you arrive. Parks Canada notes drinking water is for small jugs only, and there is no dump station at Frenchman Valley. The dump tank is at Rock Creek Campground in the East Block.
Parks Canada warns that GPS routes to the park are often wrong, so look up the West Block before you leave. Val Marie is a one-and-a-half-hour drive south of Swift Current, on Highway 4 and Highway 18. If the trip keeps going south, Montana is the next trip south.
Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park
Forest starts in the Centre Block after a long stretch of prairie, south of Maple Creek on Highway 21. Tourism Saskatchewan calls the park Canada's first interprovincial park, a collaboration of Sask Parks, Alberta Parks, and Parks Canada at Fort Walsh.
The Centre Block has electric and full-service sites. In fall the Centre Block keeps power, firewood, pit toilets, and a trailer dump, and it shuts the showers off, as of September 2026.
The West Block on the Saskatchewan side is rustic, with an equestrian campground, if you want the quieter plateau instead of the serviced loops. The park does not post a length cap. If you want more sleeping space, look at Saskatchewan RV rentals.
West of the hills, Alberta is next, with Calgary the city on that side. East across the prairie, Manitoba is the neighbour.
