Wind remakes the dunes at Monahans Sandhills State Park overnight. By late afternoon the faces are clean, and a sand disc is the way down. You rent the disc at headquarters and walk it up a bare ridge, then ride whatever line the wind left you. There are no marked trails, so the slope you pick is the whole route.
A sunset run is the one people wait for, the sand still warm and the flats in shadow. You haul the disc back up and go again until the light is gone. The park's busy season is September through March, when overnight air takes the sting out of the sand, and summer heats the dunes fast enough that midday walking is the part to skip.
Willow Draw is the campground at the edge of that sand, water and electric at the pad, off I-20 west of Midland. You cook and sleep there, and in the morning the ridges have shifted. If the bunks in a campervan are tight, look at RV rentals in Midland.
Balmorhea State Park
A spring feeds a sand-bottom pool at Balmorhea State Park all year, cool when the desert is not. The CCC bathhouse arches stand along the edge, and cienega wetlands fill the margins. You spend the day in that water after the drive west through Odessa and Fort Stockton.
The campground loop is the night, and pull-through sites take the van. The pool uses a day pass, and those passes often sell out in summer, on weekends, during school breaks, and on holidays, as of September 2026. Memorial Day through Labor Day is the busy season. Buy the pass and the campsite first, with the van as the second booking.
Davis Mountains State Park and McDonald Observatory
A McDonald Observatory star party fills the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center amphitheater for an open-air constellation tour and telescope time under the Milky Way. You sleep at Davis Mountains State Park above Fort Davis, full hookups on the developed loop, and Highway 118 is the road between the pad and that sky. The Observatory is about 180 road miles from Midland, in mountains that run cooler than the dunes and the pool.
Star party nights take advance reservations on a schedule that varies by season. They sell out around Spring Break and major holidays. Those same dates fill the park campground, especially from March through Labor Day, so the party fills the pads too. Book both before you leave Midland, and as of September 2026 a burn ban means no wood fires, with charcoal and containerized-fuel stoves still allowed.
Fort Davis National Historic Site is the walking day in town. Marfa and Alpine sit on the roads past Fort Davis, and south of Alpine Big Bend National Park is the long drive south.
