Midland's long winter trip heads south until the Chisos wall shows across the desert flats, well before the road reaches the river. At Rio Grande Village the cottonwoods shade a camp along the Rio Grande, where a family motorhome stays plugged in for several nights while the kids spend their days down at the water. Winter is the season for it, with lowland afternoons in the mid-70s to low 80s, and that's when the hookups at the river fill.
The drive is US 385 south to Marathon and on into the park, a full day with a loaded rig. A late start can break at Marathon or Alpine for the night, and the Park Service lists Marathon Motel and Trailer Court with full hookups among its options outside Big Bend.
Rio Grande Village RV Park is the park's full-hookup lot, run by Aramark, and the Park Service sets its maximum length at 38 feet. That limit decides the rental, so the site gets booked first and the motorhome second, sized to fit under it.
Midweek, the trip moves west across the park toward Study Butte and Terlingua. The Chisos Basin is the climb into a bowl of peaks on the way, and it works best as a day drive, since the Park Service doesn't recommend RVs over 24 feet at its campground.
The back half of the week sleeps just outside the boundary, where the Park Service's list of parks runs through Study Butte, Terlingua and Lajitas, with Big Bend Station and Maverick Ranch RV Park both on full hookups as of September 2026. Big Bend has no overflow sites and no boondocking, so these parks are also the fallback when the river lot is full. A parked stay at Midland East RV Park
Plenty of Midland rentals never leave town. Oilfield crews and long-stay families park a rig among the pump jacks for weeks at a time, often a travel trailer or fifth wheel that turns into a small apartment with the air running through the summer, and the town's RV parks run on that trade.
Midland East RV Park takes short and long stays on full-hookup 30- and 50-amp sites and books online. It's also the easy first night before Big Bend, with the rig hooked up, loaded and checked over before the long drive south.
Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns, out and back
Guadalupe weekends start at Pine Springs, a paved lot under the base of Guadalupe Peak, where the mountains stand up out of the desert at the New Mexico line. Winter and spring bring hard wind off the ridge, so the awning stays in and the hikes start early. Carlsbad Caverns is just over the line, which gives the weekend its shape: a night at Pine Springs, a day on the mountain, a day underground, then home to Midland.
Pine Springs has no hookups, no dump and no hose connection, so fill the water and empty the tanks in Midland before leaving. Anything shorter than 55 feet is allowed, which covers any family motorhome, and the sites book up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov, worth doing before a spring weekend.
Closer to town, Monahans Sandhills spreads dune sand over the plains, and with Balmorhea and the Davis Mountains it makes the desert loop on the Midland page for smaller rigs, a trip that suits two people better than a family motorhome.
