Kisatchie Bayou cuts sandstone through longleaf pine, with rapids in the channel and bluffs people call the Little Grand Canyon. Hiking, biking, and OHV trails spread from both campgrounds through Louisiana's only national forest, which is enough ground for a few days. You sleep at Kincaid Lake and walk the bayou when you want the water and the rock.
You wake on the shoreline at Kincaid Lake, pine around a paved loop with water and electric, hot showers, and a 24-hour camphost. The swim beach is open Mother's Day through Labor Day, and you can reserve a site on Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead as of September 2026. The loop takes long rigs, so a larger RV still fits if the group needs more sleeping space than a campervan. Summer heat and humidity statewide are why that hookup is the comfortable night.
The camp at Kisatchie Bayou is on that sandstone water, almost all walk-in and first-come, with no potable water as of September 2026, so the van stays on the Kincaid loop if you need a tap. Chicot State Park near Ville Platte is the other forest-and-lake overnight, a large state-park lake if you want that mix off the national forest.
Toledo Bend Reservoir
Bald eagles nest over Toledo Bend, and the observation deck at South Toledo Bend State Park looks out on a reservoir bass anglers treat as a destination weekend. People book the weekend for the fishing, then sleep on the shore.
North Toledo Bend State Park and South Toledo Bend State Park both run water and electric loops on the same reservoir, and South keeps pull-throughs on its premium row. Louisiana state parks book through the state system up to 13 months ahead, so the reservoir weekend is a site first, then a van.
The Creole Nature Trail
The Creole Nature Trail leaves Lake Charles as a wildlife drive through Cameron Parish, across Sabine and Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuges, then out to the Gulf beaches. Alligators show from the auto-tour road, and the Wetland Walkway at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge puts you on a boardwalk over the marsh. The refuge auto tour runs dawn until dusk year-round, excluding posted closures, as of September 2026.
Sleep at Sam Houston Jones State Park in the Lake Charles area, on pull-through sites with sewer, water, and 50-amp electric, and drive the trail as a day loop. The Gulf-facing miles are the ones that take hurricane season as a real constraint.
Caddo Lake on the Shreveport side
Cypress stands in the water on the Shreveport side of Caddo Lake, and Earl G. Williamson Park in Oil City puts a boat ramp, a fishing pier, and RV hookups on that shore. People bird from the dock. Locals fish and paddle here, and the parish camp is the overnight if you are on this side of the lake.
New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Monroe
The southeastern week is New Orleans, with the van at Bayou Segnette for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and a Grand Isle beach night. Baton Rouge is the Atchafalaya overnight, and LSU football Saturdays are the city-defining weekend. A Monroe trip sleeps at Lake D'Arbonne, with Poverty Point the day from there in the northeast of the state.
The woods west of Toledo Bend and Caddo Lake continue into Texas, and the Gulf stretch past Lake Charles lines up with Beaumont and Houston. East of New Orleans, the coast is Mississippi. North of Monroe, the next state is Arkansas.
