The Going-to-the-Sun Road leaves Lake McDonald and climbs through rock overhangs toward Logan Pass. You sleep at Apgar, behind that shore, and start the road from the lake in the morning. Fish Creek shares that same shore in summer, a second campground when the west side is in season.
Apgar is Glacier's largest campground, 194 sites, and it stays open all year. After late September it drops to primitive camping through mid-April, no potable water and no dump station, and winter stays do not need a reservation. Fish Creek is the second-largest, 178 sites, typically mid-May through early September, then closed for the winter. From spring through fall, reserve the west-side site before you reserve the van.
Between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun, vehicles longer than 21 feet including bumpers, or wider than 8 feet including mirrors, are prohibited. A campervan clears that limit. The alpine stretch over Logan Pass typically is not fully open until early July, and it typically closes in mid-October. If you want more sleeping space on nights off that road, look at a Kalispell RV rental.
As of September 2026, Glacier does not require a vehicle reservation. From July 1 to September 7 the park runs a ticketed shuttle and three-hour timed parking at Logan Pass instead.
The North Fork around Polebridge, Bowman Lake, and Kintla Lake is a Whitefish campervan trip. St. Mary, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine are east-side Glacier, on the Montana campervan page.
Flathead Lake, both shores
At Big Arm and West Shore the campsites look east across open water, shoreline nights on a lake that is its own week. You can spend a week on this water without going back into Glacier.
Wayfarers and Finley Point are the other developed units on the two shores. RV length is capped at 40 feet, and the vehicle has to fit entirely in the site's parking spur. Book the pad first in summer, then the van.
You can reserve up to 3 months ahead and at least 1 day ahead through the Montana State Parks reservation system. Yellow Bay is tent-only and first-come, and Wild Horse Island is boat-access only, not a night in the van.
Hungry Horse Reservoir
Hungry Horse Reservoir runs 34 miles through Flathead National Forest, with more than 25 peaks around the water. Lid Creek is the camp on the west shore, looking at those peaks. You reach it on the west-side road across the dam, which the Forest Service calls narrow and unsuited to larger rigs. Lid Creek has vault toilets, no potable water, and no hookups, and Emery Bay is the east-shore campground.
Lone Pine State Park
Lone Pine State Park is 5 miles southwest of Kalispell, 7.5 miles of trail with overlooks of Flathead Lake, Big Mountain, the Jewel Basin, and Glacier. Overnight parking is prohibited, so the van does not stay the night.
