Hemlock and hardwood close over the Red House woods, and Thunder Rocks is a scramble among bedrock outcrops in them, stone in stacks and leaning slabs with the trail working through the gaps.
Red House Lake is the clearing below the Tudor-style administration building. Campground loops share those same woods, so the overnight is in walking range of the rocks and the lake.
Hiking, equestrian, and snowmobile trails run past both campgrounds and keep going into the Seneca Nation's Allegany Territory at Salamanca. You walk out from the loops and come back to the same pad. Salamanca is the park's town and the seat of that territory, and Olean is the other town on the southern approach.
Quaker's Cain Hollow and Diehl Trail loops are on the far side of the park from Red House. They are the other drive-in overnight in that mixed forest.
Summer from mid-May through early September is the reservation crunch at Red House and Quaker, so lock a loop site before you go. The park warns you not to feed bears and wildlife at both areas. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan on that pad, look at Buffalo RV rentals.
Evangola and the Lake Erie shore
Evangola State Park has a sand beach under shale cliffs on Lake Erie, with campground loops right behind them. Lake Erie State Park at Brocton is the overflow, high bluffs over the lake on the same Route 5 drive past Dunkirk. Evangola, Lake Erie State Park, and both Allegany loops close by the end of October.
A marina juts into Chautauqua Lake at Long Point State Park, with a boat launch and muskellunge anglers along the shore. Overnight camping is not permitted on the point. Jamestown is the town on that lake, and the Chautauqua Institution's summer Assembly runs late June through late August. The Falls are Niagara Falls's own trip.
On Bills home dates at Highmark Stadium, the team runs an RV Lot overnight and sends Sprinter vans of any size to the Limo Lot on an advance-purchase pass. Concert nights at Darien Lake stay at the theme park's own campground, with the amphitheater and the coasters on the same grounds.
Ellicottville and Holiday Valley
Lit trails run up the ridge at Holiday Valley on winter nights, and Ellicottville is the town at the bottom. The resort has no campground, so the overnight is a room in town.
Zoar Valley
Cattaraugus Creek has cut a gorge of sheer cliffs, and people come for that hike and for the whitewater. The view is from the Forty Road viewing platform, and the walking access is that parking area plus the Valentine Flats Trail. Camping and fires are not allowed.
