Fog still sits in the ravines under Brown County State Park's 90-foot fire tower while the ridgetops are already in sun. Climb the tower for that view, then take the tree-lined park road along the ridges. Nearly 20 miles stay up through oak and maple in Indiana's largest park, the hills the DNR nicknames the Little Smokies. Mid-October through early November is when the color peaks along that ridge road.
Walks drop into deep gullies off those ridge roads, and the mountain-bike trails stay on the same hills on dirt. Nashville, on SR 46, is the town next to the park, busy on the same fall weekends as the loops. Fall color season is when you lock a site before you lock the van.
The Indiana DNR lists 401 electric sites across Buffalo Ridge, Raccoon Ridge, and Taylor Ridge. Those loops put you on the hills, in the same trees you drove through. RVs and vans come in at the west gate on SR 46. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, Indiana RV rentals fit those same electric loops.
Monroe Lake
On a hot week you lose the far shore of Monroe Lake, Indiana's largest, ten miles southeast of town, with swim beaches and marina docks on 10,750 acres of open water. Sleep the first night at Hardin Ridge, the Forest Service campground on that shore with a swim beach.
Swim in the afternoon, cook at the site, and use a launch when you want the open water. Hoosier National Forest takes Hardin Ridge reservations through recreation.gov, generally from early April through late October. Paynetown, the DNR recreation area on the same water, is the busy social shoreline on summer weekends.
The Charles C. Deam Wilderness next to the lake is a day hike from Hardin Ridge, up to the CCC-built Hickory Ridge Fire Tower looking northeast over the water and, on a clear day, Bloomington. There is no vehicle camping inside the wilderness, so Hardin Ridge stays the pad. Recreation.gov lists 36 miles of hiking trail inside it.
West of town, McCormick's Creek State Park is the closest state park and a day trip for the limestone canyon, the waterfall, the fire tower, and the CCC stone arch bridge. The canyon, the waterfall, and the fire tower stay open for walking. The campground is closed for tornado recovery as of September 2026, per the Indiana DNR.
IU football Saturdays in Bloomington
The night before an IU home game, RVs fill the Bell Tower and Gate 9 lots, with more grass parking packed along 17th, Fess, and Forrest. You sleep in the lot you paid for and walk to the stadium in the morning. By Friday night the rows are already set up, the van doing the work of a tailgate tent.
Those Saturdays land in the same fall window as Brown County color, and they compete for the same vans and the same park sites. Book both knowing they overlap, or pick the ridge or the game and let the other Saturday go.
