Katahdin and Baxter State Park from Bangor

Katahdin and Moosehead Lake are the two overnights north of Bangor. Baxter's roadside campgrounds are reservation-only in the warm months, and the gate turns away anything over the park's height, width, and length limits. Lily Bay takes sites grouped by vehicle length and has no hookups.

Campervan nights at Katahdin and Moosehead Lake

Katahdin's Tableland is open granite above the trees, and the Knife Edge follows as the arete. On still mornings Togue Pond holds a second Katahdin in the water, the last wide view before the Park Tote Road turns to gravel. Abol, Katahdin Stream, and Roaring Brook are the roadside campgrounds that put you under Maine's highest peak for the night.

Abol is the campground just beyond the Togue Pond Gate. Katahdin Stream is a Hunt Trail night, woods to treeline to the Tableland, with the Appalachian Trail's northern terminus at the edge of the loop. Roaring Brook is the Chimney Pond trailhead, and Sandy Stream Pond is next to camp for moose. None of the three have hookups or services, and they open in mid-May and run into October.

July and August fill Abol, Katahdin Stream, and Roaring Brook, so lock the overnight first and treat the van as the second booking. A trailhead parking pass is not a campsite. Baxter State Park rules bar any vehicle over 9 feet high, 7 feet wide, or 22 feet long, as of September 2026. If you need more sleeping space than that gate allows, Bangor RV rentals stay outside Baxter.

Ripogenus Gorge is the granite-walled West Branch rafting day out of Millinocket. You run the river, then sleep back at Baxter.

Moosehead Lake and Lily Bay State Park

Dunn Point mixes a swim beach with glacial boulders, campsites looking out on Moosehead's open water. You swim and boat off that beach in the warm months, then walk back among the rocks.

Book those pads through Maine's CampWithME system. Lily Bay's site map classes them by length, 20 feet on the small end and over 35 feet on the large, with no hookups listed, as of September 2026. The park is open year-round, with staffing, services, and a dump station in the warm season.

Katahdin Woods and Waters

Big Seboeis is a gravel bar on the East Branch of the Penobscot, a riverside night on the unpaved byway through second-growth forest. Sandbank Stream, Lunksoos, and Upper East Branch are the drive-to campgrounds, and everything else is hike, bike, or paddle in.

There are no services, so you haul your own water. NPS frontcountry camping requires reservations at Sandbank Stream, Lunksoos, and Big Seboeis from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, as of September 2026. Upper East Branch stays first-come in that window. Lock the overnight before you count on those unpaved roads.

Peaks-Kenny State Park on Sebec Lake

Peaks-Kenny puts a sand beach on Sebec Lake and a camp loop among glacial boulders, in Dover-Foxcroft. It is the close overnight when you cannot make a reserved Baxter site the day you leave Bangor.

Maine's Peaks-Kenny park page takes CampWithME reservations from mid-May through early October, as of September 2026, with a 2-night minimum. You have to book at least 2 business days ahead. The coast overnight is on the Acadia National Park campervan page. Rangeley, Downeast, and the rest of the state are on campervan rentals in Maine.
