Palo Duro Canyon and Lighthouse Rock

Summer is when Palo Duro Canyon State Park fills, because camping and the outdoor musical at Pioneer Amphitheater share the same nights. Caprock Canyons State Park near Quitaque holds the Texas State Bison Herd, and Lake Meredith near Fritch is the free shoreline when both state parks are booked. Cadillac Ranch on I-40 is the Route 66 stop with a spray can.

Amarillo campervan nights on the canyon floor

Lighthouse Rock is already visible from the rim as a single hoodoo on the floor, the canyon opening red and orange at your feet. The paved park road cuts down the wall in switchbacks toward it. Canyon is the town behind you on the plains.

The walls close in on the way down until the rim is a strip of sky and you are driving between red rock. The Lighthouse trail starts from this floor and leads out to the hoodoo the trail is named for. The overnight belongs down here with that trailhead.

Morning is the time to walk that trail in summer. You leave the van on the site, do the hike, and come back to the same pad with the walls still around you. The heat builds on the rock by midday.

Pioneer Amphitheater puts the outdoor musical on the canyon floor in summer, with singing, dancing, and fireworks against those same walls. Show nights fill the campsites and the day-use slots. As of September 2026, Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends reserving both a campsite and a day pass, and the electric and water sites are the pads that fit a campervan.

If your group needs more bunks than a campervan holds, look at RV rentals in Amarillo on the same canyon floor. Tent pads and backpack sites do not take the van.

On the I-40 frontage, Cadillac Ranch is ten cars nose-down at a tilt in a dirt field, paint stacked on paint. Bring a can on the Route 66 road-day out of Amarillo.

Caprock Canyons State Park

Around Quitaque, the Texas State Bison Herd grazes in the open against the caprock escarpment. You come around a bend and they are on the grass beside the road, sometimes standing on the pavement, and the van waits until they move. Most of the park's trails are open to hiking and biking, and Clarity Tunnel is the old railroad cut where bats roost, a dark walk once you are inside.

Drive-up electric sites take the campervan, primitive sites are hike-in, and equestrian sites come with corrals. Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends reserving camping and day use through spring, summer, and fall.

Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

Near Fritch, Lake Meredith is the water in the plains. Fritch Fortress looks out over the lake. Sanford-Yake puts the van in cottonwood shade on the shoreline, and Harbor Bay does the same just outside town. When Palo Duro and Caprock are full, this is the night that still has room.

As of September 2026, most Lake Meredith campgrounds are free and first-come, first-served, and they stay that way year-round. Sanford-Yake has a few fee sites with electric and water hookups that you reserve by phone. Fritch Fortress and Harbor Bay take a campervan with no hookups.

East, Oklahoma City has its own van nights. West, the route continues in Santa Fe.
