One trail system in Spearfish Canyon links Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and Savoy Pond, and Route 14A, the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, runs past those trailheads, so the drive and the walk are the same outing. Spearfish Creek is the companion for the whole canyon drive, right there beside the van. Fall color is when people give the canyon an extra night.
Deadwood is the gold-rush town from 1876 for the day you want streets. The town is inside the Black Hills National Forest boundary, forest time during the day and gaming after dark. You spend that day in Deadwood and sleep back toward the canyon.
When the Sturgis rally week arrives in August, it fills the same northern hills campgrounds you would use for the canyon. Riders fill those pads in Spearfish and Sturgis on the same nights. Lock the overnight first and treat the van as the second booking, matching the vehicle to the pad you actually reserved.
Spearfish City Campground is the overnight for a canyon morning, with full-hookup and non-hookup sites you reserve online. Primitive sites there still take RVs and trailers, and summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day is when the hookup sites go first. The southern Black Hills are Rapid City's country: Custer State Park, the Badlands, and Mount Rushmore all start from Rapid City.
The Missouri River at Pierre
The Missouri River at Pierre is reservoir water at Lake Sharpe. Farm Island Recreation Area is the overnight on that water, with a swim beach and hiking trails sharing the loop with the electrical pads. You sleep on the island and take the day on the water, swimming, walking, or fishing off the same stop.
Electrical sites stay open all year as of September 2026, with limited water and restroom service from October through April. You reserve those electrical sites online. Oahe Dam is near Pierre, an Army Corps dam on the Missouri. Bismarck is the next river city north if you keep following the water.
Chamberlain's bluff on the Missouri
The Dignity of Earth and Sky statue stands on the bluff at the I-90 rest area in Chamberlain, above the Missouri. The figure is stainless steel in a star-quilt pattern and lit at night. It honors Lakota and Dakota culture, and the bluff is the stop people make on the river crossing.
American Creek Campground is the river overnight, with RV and tent sites, a dump station, and potable water. As of September 2026 the season runs early May through late October, and the reservation window opens 90 days out.
On I-90, Mitchell's Corn Palace is a road stop with no camping of its own. The official site calls it "the world's only Corn Palace".
East along that same highway, Palisades State Park is Sioux Falls' trip. Lewis and Clark Lake is Yankton's.
Billings and Yellowstone continue the trip in Montana and Wyoming. Devils Tower is in Wyoming too.
