Beaver Stadium overnight on a Penn State weekend

Home football Saturdays from September through November are the State College trip that fills first, and the stadium lot and the nearby park campgrounds sell out on the same dates. The rest of the calendar is Black Moshannon's bog lake and Bald Eagle's lake loops, plus a bike day on Tussey Mountain in Rothrock State Forest.

Football weekends, Black Moshannon, and Bald Eagle

The night before a Penn State home game, Orchard Road is a line of campervans in striped spaces, and the tailgate village is already going at Beaver Stadium's gates. You sleep in the lot and walk in for kickoff. Sunday is when the village comes down.

Penn State's Beaver Stadium guide requires a valid parking pass in a designated space, and home games sell the lot out, so lock the permit before you book the van. As of September 2026, the lot opens the Thursday evening before a home game and must be cleared by Sunday noon. If the tailgate crew needs more bunks than a campervan holds, RV rentals in State College cover the bigger rigs.

Those same Saturdays from September through November are when Black Moshannon and Bald Eagle book up too. The stadium lot and the park sites sell out on the same weekends.

Black Moshannon State Park

The water at Black Moshannon looks like strong tea, stained by the bog springs and streams that feed the lake. A boardwalk carries you over the wetland at the shoreline. You sleep on the modern electric loop, where a few sites have full hookups. Summer in bog country means bugs and heat, so those powered pads are the ones that make the night easy.

Reservations at Black Moshannon open eleven months ahead, as of September 2026. On a home-game weekend this is where you go when the stadium lot is gone, and US 322 toward Julian, then Beaver Road, keeps you off the stadium pattern.

Bald Eagle State Park

Bald Eagle's lake fills the valley, with the Nature Inn on the shore. You boat, fish, and swim with the inn in sight, then come back to one of the two campgrounds. Some of those sites have full hookups. The park is along PA 150 between Milesburg and Lock Haven.

Book Bald Eagle eleven to twelve months ahead, as of September 2026. It is a first night that never has to touch the stadium traffic pattern.

A boat at Penn's Cave runs through the limestone cavern on an underground river, and the operator calls it "America's only all-water cavern". There is no lodging on site.

Rothrock State Forest

Singletrack runs the rocky crest of Tussey Mountain, which is the bike day out of State College. You sleep at Greenwood Furnace, in the electric loop. There are no full-hookup sites as of September 2026.

Whipple Dam is a swimming lake for a picnic or a short hike, and it has no campsites. Poe Valley keeps a small campground, and Poe Paddy is the other forest overnight.

North of State College, Pine Creek Gorge and the PA Wilds belong to the rest of Pennsylvania.
