A paved walk drops off the Natchez Trace to Jackson Falls, a concrete sidewalk down to a sculpted cascade and a clear pool at the bottom. You hear the water before you see it, then the pool opens under the rock and the Parkway is somewhere above the trees. The same walk takes you back to the road, the falls still sounding below, and the Parkway continues south of Leiper's Fork.
South of Leiper's Fork the Parkway holds the falls, the ferry house, and the campground as one stretch. You do the water and the house in the day. The primitive night is on the same road.
Above the Duck River, the brick Gordon House marks Capt. John Gordon's ferry crossing, with a walking trail from the house down to the water. You park at the house and walk to the river. The afternoon still gets you back on the Parkway toward Meriwether Lewis.
The first night is Meriwether Lewis Campground, primitive and on the same Parkway, the closest Parkway campground to Nashville. You sleep without electricity, showers, or a dump station. The NPS camping page lists those gaps as of September 2026. Summer heat and bugs are why Henry Horton becomes the easier sleep on the Duck.
A primitive night on the Parkway is still the right first night when you want to stay on the Trace. You bring water and power in the van. When the weather cooperates, the van already has what the campground does not.
The Parkway's northern miles belong to Nashville. If the trip continues into Alabama, Huntsville is the next city to plan from.
Henry Horton State Park on the Duck River
The Duck River runs past the paved campground loop at Henry Horton State Park, trees over the sites and the kayak put-in on the same bank. Sites have electric and water hookups, per Tennessee State Parks as of September 2026. When Meriwether Lewis is full, this is the night you can actually count on. If you need more sleeping space than a van bunk, look at RV rentals in Spring Hill.
The Duck here is the same river that passes the Gordon House ferry crossing. Henry Horton runs guided kayak floats weekly through summer, about 2 hours on the water, so the river you camp on is the day.
Mule Day at Maury County Park
In April, Mule Day takes over Maury County Park in Columbia. Mule teams and wagons roll into the camping fields, and the Mule Day Parade is the named event on those grounds. You sleep among the teams. Henry Horton fills that same weekend, so book the pass or the pad before the van.
Rippavilla, the Carter House, and Carnton
Rippavilla's white-columned Greek Revival portico is in Spring Hill itself, a Cheairs family house on the Spring Hill battlefield. Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood met his officers here the morning of the fight, then marched them on to Franklin. You walk through as a day stop, then continue to Franklin for the Carter House and Carnton. The Battle of Franklin Trust offers guided tours at all three, daily as of September 2026.
